KEEP PARTY POLITICS OUT OF TRADE UNIONS Mangrovite Belting Ltd. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Real Estate Journal — 20 August 1930

KEEP PARTY POLITICS OUT OF TRADE UNIONS Mangrovite Belting Ltd. A typical example of the plight to which Australian industry has been and is being re duced is .illustrated by the nineteenth half yearly report of Mangrovite Belting Ltd. The chairman of the meeting was forced to give forth the 'following: 'We regret that onl- £45/18/- profit was made during the past six months. A continuous fall in the .prices ' of . leather for export and home ???.?consumption and extreme competition from other States has just allowed us to hold our own in the fight to keep our' trade.' This is a very true illustration of the posi tion of Australian manufacturers — they - do not think of profits, but merely struggle to exist. . C6ntinuing his address, the chairman in a very able manner sums up, the present position and places his fingers on all the astounding cankers and parasites that are 'sapping the industrial tree ('though these: are in the majority so glaring as to be plain to all). 'Political T...

SAFETY Its Control, Cost and Consequences [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Real Estate Journal — 20 August 1930

SAFETY Its Control, Cost and Consequences f .' Without in any way alluding* to the regula tions, customs and liabilities of our modern protections regarding accidents, it will be gen erally conceded that they add considerably ' to the costs of production. ' A builder may possibly lose the whole of his profit from a contract, by an unfortunate accid ent, which, after costly litigation, the court may decide was not covered by -any of the/ many insurance protections he had paid for. mis is so generally appreciated overseas, as well as here, that the Trades Union Congress General Council in' England has, after long deliberation made a series of proposals in. the hope of reducing the appalling casualty list due to street and industrial accidents. Statis tics» show that in Great Britain 15,000 people are killed and 100,000 injured annually in the workshop, on the building, the street, or other places.. ' Tt is1 suggested to instal a specialist class of 'safety' engineer, to report and adv...

ISLAND LAMPS IN MACQUARIE STREET [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Real Estate Journal — 20 August 1930

N ISLAND LAMPS IN MACQUARIE STREET It is about a month since the obstruction in tended . to form an island lamp at the top of Hunter Street was knocked clown ancl later on removed; but no attempt has been made to remove the mound which formed its base. ( See illustration on left). The obstruction, and the one hear King Street (shown on the right) are so dangerous that: their presence has to be marked by trestles, from which clanger lamps aje suspended at night. The incongruity of haying*, to ' put a lamp at the base to indicate the presence of the lamp above, ancl the i litter futility ofi remaining obdurate in leaving' these obstructions to menace the traffic, des - pite their proven unappropriateness, has not yet occurred to the authorities. Perhaps they take a longer time to ' thiiik and act than most people. At all events the .obstructions should be removed.
