Reform of the Military Establishments. [Newspaper Article] — The Inquirer & Commercial News — 3 October 1855

Reform of the Military Establish ments. SFrom. the Times, May 12.1 With reference to the changes effected by her Ma j?cty's Government, I will begin with the Commis *iat iscpartment That department was uu.ier the cpntrol of the Treasury, but, by jto arrangement made by the Uovernmcnt of lord AVrdeen, and ?irtiich has been continued by the present administra tion, the Commissariat has been placed under the Secretary of State for the War department. The Commissariat is a military department, and ought, therefore, I think, to be under the command of a military chief; it ought to be administered by that officer of State to whonf it belongs to arrange the military details of the public service. Sir J. M'Jicill a must able man, has been sent out to organize and arrange the details of the Commissariat Department in the Crimea, and I believe that, under his super intendence, the commissariat arrangements are as complete as the nature of such a service will admit oi. Correspondence. TO THE EDITOR OF "THE INQUIRER AND COMMERCIAL NEWS." [Newspaper Article] — The Inquirer & Commercial News — 3 October 1855

(ftmetyQixdeixcc. ^UfS~At a general rule, we wish it to be understood ^m^^ that we do not identify ourselves with the opinions ^ftw* or expressions of our correspondents.   TO THE EDITOR OF ' THE INQUIRER AND COMMERCIAL NEWS.' SIR, — A correspondent of your contemporary,   using the name of ' Vigilans,' has in the Perth   Gazette of this day, favored the public with his     sentiments on the subject of the projected defencet by Mr Howell, of the prisoners Mrs Hurford and William Enoch Dodd, who will be tried for the murder of Hurford, — and with, the intention of prejudicing the Crown Solicitor and Mr Howell in the opinion of the Governor, indulges in inuen- does which are inferentialiy and positively false. The prisoners must have fair play — must be de- fended — must have a chance for their lives — they must be tried for murder, and not be condemned to death beforehand by the publication of garbled evidence, and an a...

Local and Domestic Intelligence. [Newspaper Article] — The Inquirer & Commercial News — 3 October 1855

Local and Domestic Intelligence On Wednesday last a murderous attack was made upon a warder by one of the prisoners in the Convict Establishment. The would-be as- sassin had some time since previously attempted ed the life of the same man, and for the offence had been flogged and otherwise punished. He, however, said that he would, at some time or other, have the man's life. The opportunity did not present itself until Wednesday last, when the unfortunate nan, happening to pass by the spot where the prisoner was at work, received a blow with a spade aimed with the intention to have cut his head open, but he drew back, and the spade, striking the fleshy part of the leg, inflicted a frightful gash. Several other blows were given, and, among them, one on the head with the han- dle of the spade. The warder was eventually rescued, and his assailant taken into custody. Al- though there were twenty men (prisoners) stand- ing by, not one interfered. We hear that, in all probability, the man...

John Mitchel's "Jail Journals" [Newspaper Article] — The Inquirer & Commercial News — 3 October 1855

John Mitchell's "Jail Journals"     (From Lloyd's Weekly Newspaper.) Mr John Vitriol Mitchel has, like Raleigh, but in a very different strain, "with his   prison hours enriched the world." His Jail Journals has just been published in New York, and is as full of shrieking and gibbering as a forest of cockatoos, and a "wilderness of monkeys." His portraits of convict life are, nevertheless, interesting: — horribly lurid. Mitchel writes with vitriol, colored with lampblack. On board the hulks the convict is respected in proportion   to his rascality; the deadliest sins are, within his guilty breast, as so many orders of merit glistening outwardly upon the hero. "One main feature in convict life I have   found to be — deep and heartfelt respect for atrocious villany, — respect the more pro- found as the villany is more outrageous . . . Several instances of this fact, which have been told me since I came on board the Neptu...
