Stu,-I must again crave a httle space in your columns in answer t cour worthy presi dent's effusion in your last week's impression,. I contedml on behult of .myself and the other two members of the public works committee, that we were only doing our duty in letting tihe works, near the po ice camp, in Grant street. It was the most dangerous portion of our main road. The erection of the tree auards on the western side had made tils turn of the road particularly unsafe for equestrians; one of th titn- tree.guards, not the equestrians-stood almost in the centre of the road; and although a medical man, and having no objection to a reasonable extension of my practice, I do not think that the bulk of the ratepayers will agree with Ihr Knowles in stigmatising thils dec...

OUR HOSPITAL. (To the Editor of the Standard.) [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 22 December 1877

OUR HOSPITAL. (To the Editor of the Standard.) Site,-I was glad to read in the report of the committee proceedings that the disadvan tage of having a purely local board of man ageoment is recognised by them, and that it is the wish of the present committee that their body should be reformed by obtaining re presentatives otherwise than wholly from the township. I wish to state, Sir, that in my opinion, and in the opinion of many others, a larger amount of subscriptinos would be got and more general assistance given if the com mittee about to be appointed were to be so chosen as to exclude as far as possible all parties acting as contractors, and consequently having a beneficial interest in the accounts dealt with. This course is adopted in the Melbourne Hospital and all large institutions of a like nature, and surely our own district could be foulid to furnish a sufficient number of individuals to manngo our one creditable charity without having the incentive of per sonal Interest to...

As it usually happens where it loving couple fall out, so it happened between Philip and Rose. As soon as RInes turned her head sirde. and took out her handkerchief to dry her eyes, heaving sigh alfter sigh from the bottom of her hteart, she was evidently in the right; and he was evidently in the wrong. He begann to comfort her, and tic keowledge he was in the wrong, confess ing he had been .t a masked ball, and that what hle ihad under his arm was no woman's dress, but his silk domino, with the mask and plumtned hat. After this repentant confession, how ever, Philip had to go throuthl a severe examination. A masquerade Is at very dangerous field for defenceless hearts, as all the inhabitants of large towns know very well. MELBOURNE LETTER. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 22 December 1877

MELBOURNE LETI'ER. (FROM? OUR OWN CORRIISPONDtNT). The crisis still hangs fire. Whether it is that both the Government and the Legislative Council are loth to let their. angry passions rise at this season of peace on earth and good will to men of good intentions (as the latest inter preters have it)-or whether more prictical, and less sentimental, con siderationa actuate the expected bel ligerents, it is impossible to say, but certain it is that neither party seem in a hurry to begim ihe conflict. On the side of the Council. however, whilst there is no haste, there is no sign of retreat, but on. the other hand, the Ministerial majority rne in something of a quandary, fir they are not slow to perceive that the very means which they many take to secure continuance of payment of members will to some, if not to many of them, result in their losing it altogether, individually, what ever may be the ithe of the pitinc;pla it-ell, us there is no other outcome to a diadlock than a dissolutio...

CRICKET. 3MANSFIELD V. ALEXANDRA. One of the most exciting matches that has ever taken place between the above clubs was played at Mansfield on Saturday last. Half the Alexandra team proceeded on horseback to Mans. field on Friday, and the remainder were driven in a four-horse coach by Mr James Doran, and arrived there at 9 a.m, on Saturdey. After taking refreshments the Alexandra team put in an appearance on the ground, and were shortly joined by their oppo aents. The captains-Messrs San dlier (Mansfield) and Wollaston (Aloxanndra) .-tossed for choice of innings, and the Alexandra skipper losing, it. was decided that his team should go in first. Walton end Rogees were the first representa tives at the wickets, the former taking strike to the bowling of Ii. Withers. ]He, however, only received three balls when his wickets were anparateid. Moon filled the vacancy, and played very steadily for the first two balls, when he succeeded in placing a single to his credit. This brought Roger...
