Japanese Enthusiasm. [Newspaper Article] — The Richmond River Express and Casino Kyogle Advertiser — 6 January 1905

Japanese Enthusiasm. 'Tun recent outbreak of rioting in Russia caused by the recall of reser vists to the colours for service in Manchuria, affords a startling and in structive contrast to what 1 have lately witnessed in Japan,' writes an Rnirlisli lnprlif-nl correMiondent. .' I have been in Tokio for some time | since the outbreak of the war, and being on friendly terms with numbers of the Japanese Army Medical Staff, have assisted them in medically exam ining reservists and others coming up for enrolment for service at the fiout. Ono of my last experiences was assist ing in the examination of lflOO of these men. They were most of them field coolies, and fine, sturdy, healthy j fellows. Of the whole lot we only had j to eject three. How Unionism Americanises Foreigners. [Newspaper Article] — The Richmond River Express and Casino Kyogle Advertiser — 6 January 1905

How Unionism Americanises Foreigners. Aa'OTIn;ii remniknblc feature of Ihe strike amongst coalminers in America was that the union supported not only union men, but a large number of non union' men who came out on strike in sympathy with them, including not a few Lithuanians and Italians. Union ism, indeed, observes no racial distinc tions; iii. this strike we hull. : besides the Jews a considerable number of Americans, Germans, Lithuanians, Italians, and even Irish and Scotch — all working together in harmony. We find a large body of Jews — the most insular of races — working on the closest terms with workmen of other nationalities, contributing largely to their support. No other force tends more strongly to secure the needed amalgamation of these diverse nation alities and to inspire them with com mon American ideals than unionism — a fact already demonstrated in the babel ot the Pennsylvania coal-fields. y And the tragedy of it all. One afternoon I talked with tho strikers on the...

The Public Service Board. [Newspaper Article] — The Richmond River Express and Casino Kyogle Advertiser — 6 January 1905

The Public Service Board. When the idea of creating the Public Service Board was conceived by the Governraeilt of the time, we wore to have a model Civil Service at a mini mum cost,. and in place of departments in' confusion, with officers tumbling over each other in their anxiety to honestly earn their wages, everything would be conducted in methodical fashion. Now, the question arises : Have tlie.se ideals liuen realised in nuy respect whatever ? Has the expenditure been 'lit. down, or has the Boiird done niiy thiiig to war-rout its continuance '?. Clearly not, if the general — t e' whole cost — be taken into consideration. The original idea was that the cost of the Board and its own staff should be limited; yet it is an annual charge upon the. finances of over £0000 that wo know to actually exist, to say noth ing of charges and contingencies that only one behind the scei.es could ?\ ouch for. The strength in numbers of this self-created department i.s 29 permanent clerks drawing ...

Another Reform Suggestion. [Newspaper Article] — The Richmond River Express and Casino Kyogle Advertiser — 6 January 1905

Another Reform Suggestion. The following suggestive remarks are made in the ' Sunday Times : ' — 'The members of the Parliament who complain about their hard work are deserving of sympathy. To show that ?s^ mpathy in a practical manner the people should agitate for amendment of the Constitution allowing for the closing of the Parliament for three years, and for sittings (not. exceeding three months) at the end of each. sub- sequent term of three years. The people would thereby' save a lot of money, relieve a number of men from cruelly hard occupations, and avoid the bad advertisement this country gets from the Parliamentary institu tion. An elected Ministry at £5000 per man — ordinary members merely to have the honor of that position, and no allowances whatever except a return ticket from their constituency to town — would do all the work with out insulting each other or the coun try. Under this system taxation, could be reduced by half, and enterprise would not be throttled owing t...

The nurse was carious, for us a general rule Johnnie prayed only on compul sion, and frequently allowed his atten tion to wander. But this was very earnest. ' What were you praying for, Johnnie ?' the nurse asked; 'I was asking God to make me of wood instead of meat, so ihat when you smacked me you'd get splinters in your hand.'

Gout Treated Surgically. [Newspaper Article] — The Richmond River Express and Casino Kyogle Advertiser — 6 January 1905

Gout Treated Surgically. It is very seldom (says ' Science Siftings') that we hear of tho surgi cal treatment of gout, and, therefore, the following two cures are rendered all the more interesting. The lirst patient was a man of 45, who had been ont partridge shooting all dsi}\ un arriving nome ne icir noiuing nit* matter, but during the night, he was attacked with severe pain in the right toe, and by morning the whole foot was swollen and discoloured. Dr. Riedel, the surgeon who was called in, found that the toe was slightly dis located, and thought that what i.s known as a bursa, a cavity filled with a clear fluid, and sittmted between muscles and tendons, had developed. He, therefore anaesthetised his patient and cut down to where lie thought the bursa would be. He con Id not tind it, however, but on going deeper found a veritable 'gout' joint. This joint he found to be full of uric acid, which he promptly removed. The deposit which had settled on the bone was also removed, and t...
