Miss Margaret Barry It is not often that State College has an opportunity of listening to an artist of the first rank , and those few who attended the reading in the Old Chapel Wednesday evening, December 14th, are congratulating themselves. Miss Margaret Barry is perhaps the leading dramatic reader on the American stage to-day. The New York Herald hails her as "the greatest reader of the age; " the conservative London Ti_,n_. ’s mentions her as possessing "remarkable dramatic reserve power and concentration ," and furthermore characterizes her as "exquisitely cultured both in speech and manner; " and President Roosevelt with characteristic enthusiasm declares her to be "A second Scott-Siddons. " Miss Barry presented six scenes from "Les Miserables. " Her rendering was in marked contrast with that of the professional elocutionist. She did not depend on mere impersonation , on make-up, facial grimace , and imitation , but she gave an interpretation of the _mr s ~ erp iece. For the ti...

Why is it that when one alternator runs as a synchronous motor it acts as a condenser and causes a lead of the current over the pressure , and thus causes a higher pressure at the motor than at the generator alternator, besides causing a large current to flow , under certain adjustments of the field excitation. A. The pressure which drives the current through the motor armature is the resultant of the impressed and counter pressures. Since the synchronous motor must move at constant speed the counter pressure varies with the motor field excitation. By drawing a diagram of the pressure it may be seen that with strong motor excitation the current must lead the ...

Thursday, Jan. 5, 1905. The year just gone has been a very prosperous one, on the whole, for State College. The most notable event was the dedication of the Carnegie Library and the consequent presence of Mr. Carnegie, Gov. Pennypacker , Mr. Schwab and many other distinguished visitors. It was a red-letter day in the history of the institution and the results which are bound to come, cannot help but have a beneficent effect on the f uture growth and development of the College. The spirit _0_± growth and expansion of which the Schwab Auditorium was the first material indication has not been allowed to die away. In addition to the Carnegie Library, the Agricultural Building and McAllister Hall are substantial marks of the progress of this "new era. " The last named is rap idly nearing completion , while the Agricultural Building is ready for occupancy. Along student lines of activity, the advance has been no less marked. The base ball season of 1904 was a highly successful one, the mo...
