FBI Chief Named Head Of Security G. Christopher Callan, former section chief of the FBI, has been named director of the Department of Security at the University. Albert Diem, vice president for business administration, announced that the 52-year-old newcomer will assume full responsibility for the University's security function on July 15. Callan since 1948 has been chief of the Special Inquiry Section of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. He concluded 25 years of varied service with the bureau on Nov. 19, 1959. Diem said a spreading vandalism and growing losses in laboratory equipment and prize livestock, combined with the need to effect operating economies, prompted the decision to strengthen the University's security program. "As more of our physical plant moves to the periphery of the campus," Mr,.Diem explained, "it becomes increasingly necessary to bolster our security forces. We believe a man of Mr. Callan's experience and background will help us to resolve this and o...

Magner Will Head Newly Established Slavic Department A Department of Slavic Languages has been created with Dr. Thomas F. Magner as its head. The department was established by the Board of Trustees because of increasing enrollment and the increasing importance of a knowledge of the Russian language. Enrollment in the current Russian program, which includes 11 undergraduates and two graduate courses, has shown a rapid increase. Last semester, more than 350 students registered in the Russian program, the maximum number that could be handled with the staff available. The principal activity of the new department will be the leaching of Russian language and literature, but its work will also include other Slavic cultures of Eastern and Southern Europe.
