INFLUENCE OF AGITATION ON CIVILIZATION . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 April 1875

INFLUENCE OF AGITATION ON CIVILIZATION . BY K . H . According to Webster , agitation is the disturbance of tranquillity , or an examination of a subject of controversy . When tranquillity reigns the progress of civilization is soon retarded . Though the husbandman till the soil , the mechanic ply his tools , and the professional man pursue his avocation ; yet after long continued peace , there will be a gradual slackening of speed . There is in human nature a proneness to adaptation to surrounding circumstances . The great energies of mind and soul lie , in a manner , dormant while no opposition or agitation stimulate them to action . It has been said , that in time of peace , people have more leisure to employ in mental culture . Experience proves that universal education is seldom furthered , by long continued tranquility . In a long undisturbed state of society , the wealth quietly flows into the coffers of a few , who wield the power thus within their grasp , to oppress the mass...

PAINTING . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 April 1875

PAINTING . BY MARY LAKNED . Of the various forms of Art in America , Painting has taken a high rank but not in its highest form . Painting , says Coleridge is a something between a thought aiid a thing , so if the painter s material workmanship would stop just where the beholder s imagination should begin , he would indeed achieve the greatest success . That spirit which prefers delicacy and finish in a painting to depth and strength of thought embodies the idea of Turner s curt criticism of Guide s Mater Dolorosa — It is polished to Inanity ; even rudeness and roughness if accompa-. nied with manly breadth are better than the most patient minuteness in detail . Painting as one of the fine arts has two branches , Oil and Water-colors ; the last mentioned department holds a lower rank in America than in Europe . Indeed most of the great European masters , Giotto , Massaccio , Michael Angelo , Correggio , Perugino , Raphael , and a host of others were water-color painters . Raphaels S...

' THE PEOPLE OUGHT TO KNOW IT . " [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 April 1875

THE PEOPLE OUGHT TO KNOW IT . The Committees of the Senate and House of Representatives which visited the University February 2 nd and 4 th , expressed their surprise at the magnitude of the University , and urged that it ought to be more extensively advertised . The people ought to know what sort of an institution they have here . These splendid halls ought to be crowded with students , was the language of more than one . We are getting used to this expression . Every visitor of intelligence who comes to the University expresses his surprise at the unexpected grandeur of the institution . . The richness of its great library , laboratories and apparatus , the crowds of students in the various departments , and the large facilities offered here for an education of the best and most valuable sort . And . nearly every one adds that the Un iversity ought to be more widely advertised , that the people ought to know it . Now we do not like to blow our own trumpet too loudly , but we too b...

1 ^ 1 I . I . u . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 April 1875

1 ^ 1 I . I . u . BY PEARL . High on a hillside s graceful slope Where sunbeams love to linger long , Was our home ; and dearer home Ne er dwelt in hapless wanderer s song Fair Sunnyside were its true name . For when without , as often chanced , Thick clouds , close veiled the sunshine warm , From hearts within it brightly glanced ; For love , that source of light to souls , Was there adundant , pure and free ; And tuned the chords that gave our home Its sweet celestial harmo ny , And though the fennels bitter draught Our lips have prest mid flooding tears Our cup ofjoy oft measured full , For years . O swift delightful years , Aye swift , too swift , we all agree Since in review they only show The fairest pleasures crystalized , And beautiful as falling snow ; But brighter , fairer , gleamed the past , And dearer far the present seemed , When came last days within the home Where long wed lived , and loved , and dreamed . But we must go , for knowledge fair , With voice so sweet tha...

A VACATION RECREATION . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 April 1875

A VACATION RECREATION . COG-TOOTH . Tomah proved to be a very smart little town for one apparently « JO unfavorably situated mid sand hill and marshes . Its inhabitants exhibited a pride for it which seemed as decided as that shining out in beams of printers ink for Chicago or New York . This spirit , however , is to be admired as the great founder of beautiful buildings , streets and grounds . The town depends largely for its thrift upon its cranberry trade . It is also in quite an extensive lumber region . Our headquarters were here for some weeks , but our center of operations was seven miles N . E . at the Wisconsin Valley Junction , or intersection of trie Wis . Valley with the West Wis , R . R . These roads intersect in parts that are straight , or at least , intended to be so for upwards of thirty miles . The latter road was wonderfully near a straight line , nearer than usually results from railway transit work . The secret of this remarkable straightness was discovered whil...

A COMPLIMENTARY LETTER . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 April 1875

A COMPLIMENTARY LETTER . The following letter from Hon . Mr . Barrett and Hon . A . E . Stewart of the House of Representatives , is so full of generous feeling that we cannot refuse ourselves the pleasure of giving it publicity . The students of this University heartily reciprocate the good will expressed by the writers , and will not soon forget the good words spoken thus by these gentlemen and their colleagues of the Committee which visited us . HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES , ) SPRINGFIELD , III . March 23 d , 1875 . j DEAR DR . GREGORY : —To-day t most cheerfully signed a statement commending to the public the Industrial University over which you have the honor to preside . PERSONALS . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 April 1875

PERSONALS . Since the departure of D . E . Barnard , the Gymnasium is under the direction of those graceful gymnasts , H . H . Tyndale , and J . R . Mann . During the last month John E . Leflar , one of our prominent seniors , delivered a lecture before the Lyceum of Batavia , I ll ., at their request , on Earth Life-or The Man Mission . John was received by a large audience and his lecture is spoken of in the highest terms . It is with tears in our eyes that we chronicle the departure of our lively Junior , A . L . Dunning alias Adipose . We scarcely know which to pity most , Al . or a number of Church Street residents . He will return for Commencement . H . F . Baker , our enterprising Local Editor , has been suffering for several weeks from a severe attack of Typhoid Pneumonia but is slowly recovering . On this account our readers will please excuse any lack of interest in the Local Department . Our old friend Cal , Jim , By Gum , Friday , Doc , Staley , has left us for the Sprin...

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 April 1875

PRESIDENTS MESSAGE . To the Senate of the College Government of the Illinois Industrial University : Among the many blessings of our beloved University , perhaps there is none for which we , as students , should feel more grateful or so thankful , as the privilege of self-government . The time has indeed come when some knowledge of governmental affairs is an essential part of a liberal education . No knowledge relating to government , may prove of more value to you individually , to the society in which ypti shall live , to the state , or to the nation , than that of legislation ; certainly no study outside of the regular curriculum , will pay greater returns for a reasonable amount of your time and attention . Never in the history of our government has there been a time for more deliberate thought and decisive action . Upon you , honorable senators , devolve the most important duties , —duties not important as regards your own glorification ; Aou are to make laws for a government ,...
