SMOKERS VOTED DOWN SACRAMENTO , Cal ., Dec . 4 . —Every night last week the audiences of the Orpheum theater votedon the question of whether or not smoking shall be allowed during the performance . The odds are strongly against the weed . The average night vote was 674 against and 328 for the smokers . Smoking in the theaters was not known in Sacramento until the Orpheum opened with its attractions a few weeks ago . Since then there have been many adverse comments made because smoking was allowed , until the management finally decided to determine the public sentiment in the matter . Smoking will , no doubt , be out of order after this week .

SONG A HIT . Rum Turn Tiddle , a song by Edward Madden and Jean Schwartz , is sweeping the country , making an instantaneous hit wherever it is sung . Al Jolson sang it first at the New York Winter Garden and it was a riot the first night . Valeska Suratt is using it in The Red Rose , it being the only interpolated song in that show , and Bessie Wynn is using it in vaudeville . The song and many other hits are published by the new and enterprising firm of Jerome & Schwartz .

DAMAGES FOR DEATH OF DWARFS RECALLSLAFAYETTESTRAGICEND Parents of Children Who Perished in Edinburgh Theater Fire Obtain Court Ruling and Award . LONDON , Dec . 5 . —In the Sheffield County Court Judge Benson considered the matter of compensation to the parents of the two Sheffield children who were burned to death in the theater fire at Edinburgh , in which the Great Lafayette perished . In the case of Mrs . Dale , a widow living in Hammond street ) Sheffield , the sum of $ 500 had been agreed upon . Alice Dale , it will be remembered , was a dwarfish girl of 15 , whose personality well fitted her for the part of the Teddy bear . It was ordered that $ 150 should be paid at once to the mother , and $ 2 . 50 a week afterward until the money was exhausted . The other burned midget was Joseph Coates , about 14 , son of Alfred and Lucy Coates , Owlerton . DID NOT GET SALARIES J ACKSONVILLE , Fla ., Dec . 5 . —The vaudeville actors playing at the New Majestic theater , last week , only received a portion of their salaries for their work and that only by taking Saturday night s receipts and dividing it . The house had been under the management of John Pryor , who claimed that he had transferred the lease and was not responsible for the salaries . However , some one got all the money taken in except Saturday nights receipts . Allora & Barrington , Huegel & Sylvester , Barney First , Andy Rankin and another team were the unfortunate ones . Sunday morning the people for this week s show arrived in town , not having heard of the trouble . This party included Chas . ATLANTIC CITY PROTESTS A TLANTIC CITY , Dec . 12 . —Yesterday the Italian residents of this city sent a committee to all of the moving picture shows in this city with a strong protest against the showing of fake pictures of the war between Italy and the Turks . It is claimed that these films were taken on the outskirts of Brooklyn and not abroad . The owners of the picture theaters agreed to cut out all the objectionable films . The committee also sent resolutions to the Italian ambassador at Washington asking him to use his influence in stopping these and pictures of the same style .

WELCH NOW A GOBBLER CHICAGO , Dec . 12 . —Ben Welch , of the Ben Welch Burlesquers , playing at the Star and Garter theater last week , was initiated into the Chicago order of the Gobblers . On Wednesday night , forty strong , the Gobblers left their headquarters and called upon Mr . Welch in his dressing room at Mr . Moe s theater .
