PBINOIPLES OP ANIMAL " BEEEDING [Newspaper Article] — Farm Press — 1 April 1907

PBINOIPLES OP ANIMAL BEEEDING From an Address by Prof . B . X Kinzer , Before the Angus Breeders at Manhattan , Kansas Animal breeding may be defined as the science or art which , treats , of the reproduction and improvement of all domestic animals . It is a science insofar as it discovers and systematically arranges the principles which relate to the improvement of live stock . It is an art insofar as it successfully uses these principles in effective improvement . , . Some knowledge of the principles which govern the successful breeding of live stock have been possessed from the very earliest periods , but not until within the past two or three centuries has there been any great advancement made in scientific breeding or improvement . Our successful breeders have studied the principles and laws which govern and control ,, and although there have been many theories advanced , and almost an equally large number exploded , there have , been many principles proven beyond a doubt , and...

III Orcliardl and Cardi al jk \ | , ¦ — JJ * M ^/ , ^ ^ ^ i ^ i S ^ fc gfr g ^ iS » fo « fr Ss ^ Hsl EARLY FBUITS AND VEGETABLES . By H . H . Shepard . ( Photos by the Author . ) GAEDBNING has kept us fully in the race with all modern progress . Time was when people got along with almost anything in the line of life essentials—food , clothing and shelter . Fresh fruits and vegetables were to be had only in the summer ; rubber overshoes were not invented , and overcoats worn only by the rich ; only one room in the house was heated , and that one only in spots . Nowadays people have things both in and out of season , and rightly so , for it is the province of man to utilize , rather than fear , Nature . He has not subdued the earth , but Tomatoes and Peepers from the South . rather touched it , and it has blossomed and borne fruit . He has , by > transportation and glass , changed winter into summer and brought parts of the tropics into temperate zones . The human system be...

POULTRY [Newspaper Article] — Farm Press — 1 April 1907

POULTRY NO off season with poultry . There should be an income from the poultry yard every day in the year , but the winter months are built especially for the busy season . ¦ While the poultry is waiting for grass , roots are especially go ° d for them . One way to get $ 2 a bushel for wheat is to feed it to hens and sell the eggs for 30 or 40 cents per dozen . Chicken meat is no more expensive to raise than beef or mutton , but xt w more palatable and sells for a higher price . The same amount of feed given to poultry will make more money than when fed to any other kind of . domestic animal . Chickens should not be neglected because they are smaller than other domestic animals . Their needs are just as big in proportion . Poultry men are very much interested in any process that will keep meat scraps in good feeding condition until the last is used . Will poultry men kindly g ive their experience for the benefit of others ? It is desirable to get fowls up to their full growth as qu...

1 Tke Grange TO OONTBOL WESTBBN WHEAT PBICES BETTER prices for wheat ^ sold in small lots , is the motto of the United States Wheat Growers Association , the Inland Emp ire division of which will meet in Spokane , Wash ., May 14 , to elect officers and adopt bylaws . The organization is intended to combine the wheat growers of Washington , Oregon and Idaho .
