IN a town which wo will call Middle-town, becauso it was of tho middlo 6ize, dwelt a worthy shopkeeper, hearing the odd name of Jeremiah Wag. By dealing in all sorts of commodities, and steady attention to his business, ho managed to keep up his respectability, and doubtless would have considorbly increased his store, but for tho gradual ineroaso of his family. For sev eral years after his marriage a littlo Wag was ushered annually into the world ; and though there had latterly been somewhat loss of regularity, as many as ten small heads might bo counted every evening in his back parlor. "Who could that .friend be?" was the tnizislinir question, which no one could answer ; but nis unremitting attention to business, the punctuality of his payments and other evidences of his prosperity, suffice to insure him goneral respect, though certain envious busybodies would venture now and then to hint significant ly, that "all is not gold that glistens." So matters went on pleasantly with the Wags, till winter, when Tom and bis three sisters came home for the holidays, and the latter assisted their mother in preparing for the festivities of the season. It wu Christmas eve, and the whole of the family were congregated in the little back parlor, when young Jerry started up at the well-known sound of a custom er at the shop door at which he arrived with a hop, step and jump ; and, jerking it open, beheld a little old gentleman wrapped in a large cloak. FAItM AND HOUSEHOLD ITEMS We Invite eommvntvaUon from all person who are interested in matters properly belonging to tills department. 1 Cleaning Orcin for Market. Tt may be Been by the market reports that Canadian barley usually brings from six to teu cents per bushel more than the barley raised in the I'nitcd-States. Can adian barley is by no means so much bet ter than our grain that dealers can afford to pay ten cents per bushel more for it than for tho barley produced in the Uni ted States. Hut Canadian fanners take more pains in keeping the seed grain and the entire cvop, alter it is thmshed, en tirely free from other grain. It would pay every farmer well to exercise a little moro care in keeping tho different kinds of grain entirely separate from such other grain as will be depreciated in value by tlie mingling together of several sorts Tho diflieulty might easily be avoided by a more free use of the fanning mill, an i...

Miss Farquhnr, removing only her dress, after commending herself to Heaven, lay down on the couch beneath the bod-clothes, and, worn out with the unwonted fa tigues of the day and hardships ot the journey, speedily fell asleep. She had slept as she afterwards said she believed nearly an hour, when a rat running across her face caused her to start violently from her slumber, with that feeling of vague horror which we all of us feci when suddenly roused from sleep in a disagreeable manner in a strange place.
