T " -:~R DE-:IMOCRAT. PV3LI BHD WEEKLY AT IT. FRANCISVILLE, LOUISIANA. The United Brethren conference in Indiana has refused the request of many women to strike out the word "obey" in the marriage service. They seem determined to protect the song birds in Pennsylvania. An Italian was fined at Milford the other day the sum of $25 and costs for kill ing a robin. It was Hawthorne who alluded once to the finished finesse of the practiced politicians as a craft of men "skilled to adjust those preliminary measures which steal from the people, without its knowledge, the power of choosing its own rulers." If,however, suggests the New York Observer, the people would not so generally and deliber ately go to sleep while the politicians plot the latter's craft might be greatly circumscribed, if not concluded al together. Upward of 35,000 signatures have already been obtained for the Scottish National Memorial to the Queen, pray ing that in state documents the words "Great Britain" and "British" s...

A CHAPTER ON CANNING. VALUABLE HINTS AND RECIPES FOR ANXIOUS HOUSEKEEPERS, There is Economy in Canning Fruits and Vegetables at Home-Hlow to Prepare Fruits For the Cooking Kettle-The le.dt *Iars--Recipes Useful in Cannkig. In a recent article on modern house hold improvements, writes Eliza R. 1 Parker, in the Housewife, the art of ca:tuing fruits and vegetables was mentioned as one of the most import- I ant in lessening the labor of the house- e wife, and contributing generally to the comtort of the family. By the pro- ° coss of canning, the pantry shelves in every household may always be filled r with vegetables and fruits, as well as t Lish and meats. The inquiry comes to us every spring from many anxious liousekeepers: Is it more economical b to can your own fruits and vegetables, or to purchase them? After much g consideration given the matter, our nl judgment confirms the belief that can ning can be done more economically i at home; true, an inferior article can si be purchased...
