Cavanaugh, chairman of the city democratic committee, presided over a rery enthusiastic meeting at the Island Citj club rooms Saturday evening. The question as to the legality of the votes cast by the students at the Augustan College at the last municipal election was discussed. It was unanimously agreed that a contest of the late election on the mayoralty should be entered at once to try the legality of those votes. Chair man Cavanaugh was authorized to employ counsel, which he will at once. Judge Wilkinson and Wm. McEniry will likely be employed. This it not a new idea; it has been discussed with increasing favor from time to time for years, and will eventually receive the approval of congress. It will be re membered that the subject was ably discussed recently at a meeting of the South Rock Island debating society, and some eicellent reasons then brought out were published in the A rocs at the time, the strongest and roost convincing of which being the geographical and climatic advantages, and the fact that it would be away from acy point of naval , attack from the sea, and under the pro tectlon of the largest arecnal in the world in the event of war. An Argus representative met them on a train Saturday, and they ex pressed themselves as thoroughly dis trusted with the new country and their own foolishness.
