We have been requested by sev eral correspondents to give them Information of the use of bi-sulphid of carbon in the destruction of ground squirrels and gophers-. Professor E. Hilgard recently pub lished a very satisfactory paper on this subjeot in the State University Bulletin, from which we make tbe following extract: Two years ago, iv a leotureon the phylloxera question, I suggested tbat tbe same substance which proves so successful against that insect, as well as against the rats of Paris and other cities, might be successfully used against tbe Cali fornia squirrel also. I could uot, at the time, follow up the suggestion by experiment. The llerald Steam Printing House Is :»>t surpassed by any Job Trlntlng office On tho Pacific Coast, outside of San Fran ,el*co, In facilities for doing Job work Low prices, good work and expedition may be relied upon at this offtoe. The Situation Improving for the Democrats. It It somewhat singular but true f that the towns which are being I carried by the Workingrneii's party are in every case Republican. An ." other lesson which we draw from k the elections which have so far : taken place is that the chances of | tbe Workingmeu's success have 1 been largely increased by a fusion I between the Democrats and Repub licans. The political situation has I been greatly altered during the past I two or three weeks. For a while it looked as if the Workingmeu's party bad quite as good a show as either of tbe old parties in the elec | tion of delegates to the Constitu tional Convention. spos Srttgdfui Sirrnld. (From the Evening Express.) THE RIVER TURNED. We were present yesterday after noon at tbe turning of tbe water of tbe river iuto tbe tuunel just com pleted by Captain Moore from tbe City Water Company's new reser voir to a point several bundred yards above the upper railroad railroad bridge. Tbe tunnel meas ures 3,410 feet in lengtb, is five feet in tbe clear in width and six feet in height. It passes through a great variety of formations, includ ing sandstone, clay, trap reck and black earth. Portions of the tun nel had to be stoutly limbered in order to render it safe to the work ers, and tbo whole of it will have to be supported more or less with heavy cross-pieces. The workmen also passed through a species of clay, lying in strata like slate, which de composes and crumbles as soon as exposed to the air. Wherever this formation has been encounter ed it has been solidly timbered. Tbe cut approaching the tunnel from this end is about two hundred feet in leng...

I Steam Print lug House Is not surpassed by any Job Printing office on the Paoltle Coast, outside ot San Fran* clsoo, iv faollittes for doing job work Low prices, good work and expedition may be relied upon at this office. The Beam in their Own Eye. When a Republican Jourual starts out to accuse the Democratic party of derelictions as to houesty It does a highly absurd thing. In tha first place, tbe sum total of Democratic peculations since the government was established would be disdained by an average Repub lican Quartermaster or Commissa ry. Every act of robbery perpe trated by Tweed aud bis gang was authorized by enactments of the Republican Legislature of New York. His colossal scheme of spoliation was put through by the same men who deny to New York City to-day her fair share in the representation in tbe Legislature for no other reason than because tbat would make that body Demo cratic instead of Republican. A Secure Position. For quite two years Los Angeles city and county have beeu in what may fairly be called almost a com atose condition. Four years ago a great movement was witnessed hare. It was suddenly discovered that, in a superficial area which embraces upwards of three mil lions two hundred thousand acres, were included at least eight hun dred thousand acres of the finest garden lands on the footstool. It was supposed, prior to that time, tbat there were a few scattered orange groves and vineyards in this county, and that countless herds of cattle and horses and nocks of sheep depastured our rich, sponta neous grasses. We were looked upon principally as a "cow" coun ty, although our oranges and gr...

The Cleveland Leader gives the following exposure ot the attempt to besmirch the reputation of Bishop McCoskry, who has been charged with wilting indecent let ter* to a young lady: It is now known that the letters upon which the charges against the veiMrable Bishop were based are ot two classes, the real and the forged oue. The first class includes four, which are now iv the safe of the First National Bank in that city. They are said by a correspondent who has seen them to be "letters ■uoh as a Christian gentleman, es pecially a clergyman, might write to a young female ward—letters of advice, counsel and instruction," The indecent letters, on the other band, are plainly the work of an other hand. Tbey bear no signa ture except a hieroglyphic cipher, and their language is coarse, mis spelled and vulgar, as different as possible from the chaste, scholarly manuscript of the Bishop, as shown In the genuine lettets.
