ADDRESS [Newspaper Article] — Visalia Weekly Delta — 7 January 1860

ADDRESS Of Rev. B. W. Taylor, before the Masonic Fraternity of Visalia, delivered on the anniversary of St. John's Day. Fellow Citizens and Rrethrcn of the Fraternity : Your partiality might have been confurred upon a man more suitable for the occasion than myself. Young in the mystic relation, I feel myself unable to do justice to the time-honored institution that I am called upon to represent. Masonry, to me, but a few years ago, was "wrapped in the silen solitude of its own originality," through which the boldest wing of conjecture was unable to explore its flight, and bring out a satisfactory solution of that that was within. But not being possessed of that Goth and Vandal spirit which tears the laurels of merit from the brows of men or institutions, I entered its thre«h'.ld, its vestibule and its sanctum, and fou; .1 at every step an institution worthy to be promoted among mankind. An institution that has lived amid the ruin of empires, and still towers above political agitatio...

What Will be the Result! [Newspaper Article] — Visalia Weekly Delta — 7 January 1860

What Will be the Result! We see but too plainly manifested by the opposition press of the East a truckling desire to sidle out of any responsibility connected with the Harper's Ferry tragedy.— They now wish, that the test has been made, and Jailed, to cast the odium upon the Democratic party, but thus far have failed. The exposures which are being made from day to day, from the pulpit and the press, are too palpable. The Rev. Henry Ward Beecher, who superintended the rifle meeting in the North Church, New Haven, in a sermon preached in his Church, in Brooklyn, on the 20th of October last, said: "Let no man pray that Brown be spared. Now, he has only blundered. His soul was noble— hit work miserable. But a cord and a gibbet would redeem all that, and round up Brown's failure with a heroic success." When we reflect upon words, such as the foregoing, falling from the lips of a man like the Rev. Henry Ward Beecher, and that too in the house of God while performing, or pretending so to d...

The Duty of Patriots. [Newspaper Article] — Visalia Weekly Delta — 7 January 1860

The Duty of Patriots. We copy the following well written article frbm the Washington Constitution, of the 3d inst, and commend it to the perusal of conservative men everywhere. The Constitution says : There are periods in the history of nations when years; and even centuries, are concentrated in the events of days and hours. There are causes, the operations of which have been of long continuance, that produce sudden, disastrous, and almost explosive effects. Most of the revolutions by which empires have been overthrown, although proceeding 'from measures of long duration, break, forth with convulsive force and energy. There are earthquakes in the moral and political, as well as in the physical world, which in a few moments destroy the work of ages. He is no true patriot, or friend of this country, who, in the hour of impending gloom and danger, will fail to give the timely warning of approaching disaster. It were vain and wicked to deny the palpable fact that the country is in dange...

LINES —By Alice. [Newspaper Article] — Visalia Weekly Delta — 7 January 1860

LINES —By Alice. There is some tie to bind us nil To this bleak world of care — Tho' fortune frown and ills betide, Still there's some spot that's fair. Yes, though our prospect's clouded o'er By sorrow's murky air, We'll look afar, and oft descry A faint light glimmering there. When friends we love, still hover near, Our joy or grief to share, We feel that earth's not always dark — There's sometimes spots that's fair. New Year's Hyinu. Dedicated to the readers of the "Delta." Vt riIII.OMAHTHIA. Another year has past and gone — Another new year has begun; Within the year that lately closed, What millions have in death reposed. While millions on the earth were born, As many did through death return; While some were born yet others died, And in the silent grave were laid. Thus many start their course on earth, And others close their lips in death; Yet juveniles but little know What they in life must undergo. But let us all remember well God's spirit docs with mortals dwell. All things...
