15 l,L] tfj 0$ Southwest Chinese Journal JANAURY 1, 1978 Mancuso, Mann, McKaskle, Macy Stand Against Pornography... rr, rr As program chairman of our medical auxiliary, I had the opportunity to invite Geneva Kirk Brooks, President of Citizens Against Por- nography to speak at our meeting. Since that day our doctor's wives have gained a new awareness of what is happening in Houston in regards por- nography. As reported on TV, the Houston Post, and the Houston Chronicle, young children are used, beaten, and sexually abused...sometimes sold into slavery with the mere use of a credit card. They are used for models, for prostitution, in obscene books, in x rated movies.... originating in Houston and California...and the material distributed throughout the nation. Houston is 12% higher in crime rate than any other city in the United States. It is a matter of grave concern. At this moment, doctor's wives are aligned with Geneva Kirk Brooks as well as Church Women United, the Greater Housto...

An extremely popular political figure in California, she won that state's 3rd highest office by a margin of over 1.2 million votes. Amidst widespread speculation that Mrs. Eu is quietly running for the governor's office now occupied by fellow Democrat, Jerry Brown, her Houston visit sparked off more talk that she is gathering up support for a yet to come gubernatorial campaign. Mrs. Eu's biography reads like a Horatio Alger story with an Oriental twist. She was born in the back of a Chinese hand laundry in Oakdale, California. She worked her way through college to earn a...

13 i'tf ifj b# $ Southwest Chinese Journal FEBRUARY 1978 Chinese New Year Fun-d Raisers Drs. Beng I. and Daisy Ho by June Dove Leon# The Chinese New Year celebra- tion at the Shamrock Hilton on February 11th is almost S-O-L-D O-U-T. But...of course! In four years of devoted service to the Chinese Professional Club Dr. Beng T. Ho, aided by his lovely Daisy (phonetically, Dah Hsi in Chinese) has helped to boost ticket sales to literally wall~to-wall people. Indications are that this year's welcoming of the Lunar New Year, the Year of the Horse 4676, will prove fantastic with proceeds to benefit the Scholarship Fund. Two orchestras will marshal in the Horse. The young and the young-at-heart will 'rock' to Jeff Uzick's "Midstream" while traditionalist waltz, tango, fox trot and cha-cha to A1 Mark's popular rhythms. At $15 per person dinner is scheduled at 7 P.M. in the Emerald Poom with A1 Mark's orchestra to play from 8 P.M. to Midnight. At $5 per person, those who desire only to dance...

Upon entering, one had the feeling that a bit of China had been transported to Carillion West Shopping Village. Actually, it was the Buffet Grand Opening Party of Hunan East, Inc. Restaurant at 10001 Westheimer on a Saturday noon! Peter H. Hwang greeted us with a warm handshake and a radiant smile. Here was an experienced restaurant entrepreneur...for as a Chicagoan...his Mandarin House was rated by the Chicago Tribune.. .as a 5 star*****restau- rant...the ultimate in Chinese dining. Talking to Mr. Hwang, we learned that he had interviewed 200 of the best cooks from Taiwan...finally selecting two from this competition. Hunan East, Inc. is opened with great pride. 16 W if] 5# f-K Southwest Chinese Journal FEBRUARY 1978 The Message by June Dove Leong A body is not one single organ, but many. Suppose the foot should say, 'Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body' it does belong to the body none the less. Suppose the ear were to say, 'Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body', it does still belong to the body. If the body were all eye, how could it hear? If the body were all ear, how could it smell? But, in fact, God appointed each Limb and organ to its own place in the body, as he chose. If the whole were one single organ, there would not be a body at all; in fact, however, there are many different organs, but one body. The eye cannot say to the hand, 1 I do not need you'; nor the head to the feet, 'I do not need you.' Quite the contrary: Those organs of the body which seem to be more frail than others are indispensable, and those parts of the body which we regard as less hon- ourable are created with special honour. To ...
