soundout By David Webb questions with Jonadian Boarman I Jonathan Boarman is a software developer and Web systems manager who has founded EqualityAction.org in an effort to put his professional skills to use for the benefit of the GLBT rights movement. When operational, the nonprofit organization's volunteer staff will assist small gay organizations in the development of technology to improve fund-raising and overall effec- tiveness. He currently is assisting the Dallas Gay and Lesbian Alliance and the DFW Federal Club with Web site management. Boarman is a native Dallasite who grew up in East Dallas. What inspired you to found EqualityAction.org? I wafilooking around and seeing how, to a large extent, many small and medium-size organi- zations in the GLBT movement are a complete failure when you compare them to what they could be. It's the small organizations that will push the movement forward. That's what hap- pened in Massachusetts. It has the most successful gay lobbying group ...

dossier Banymore Gets Lucky with Messing Drew Barrymore and Debra Messing are now a sister act. The pair signed on to star in 8 Mile director Curtis Hanson's latest come- dy-drama, Lucky You, scheduled to begin shooting this month in Las Vegas. Bisexual Barrymore plays a singer in a Cirque du Soleil-style casino show, with Will & Grace's Messing as her older sister. The story, penned by Oscar-winning screenwriter Eric Roth (Foirest Gump), involves the sib- lings meeting a professional poker player {Troy star Eric Bana), a man dealing with his game and with his own estranged father. There's a love story in there, too, and no word yet about who falls for whom, but the familiar plot contrivances of a "what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas" triangle seems like- ly. If it means more shirtless screen time for Eric Bana, then let it happen. Dallas City Council candidate P.D. Sterling said he and his campaign volunteers "are work- ing like gangbusters, trying to raise money and going to more cotton-picking meetings than I thought I'd ever be involved in in my entire life." Sterling is running for the District 14 seat currently held by Veletta Forsythe Lill. Lill is unable to run again because of term limits. The deadline for filing as a candidate is Monday, and Sterling said he is waiting until then "because I just want to get as many signa- tures as possible. Boyd, the author of the www.DallasArena.com Web site. The site regularly lambastes Fantroy and other members of the council. Boyd refers to the council members by unflattering nicknames in her columns. Council member Ed Oakley, who is gay and lives in Oak Cliff, said he believes it is critical for Dallas' GLBT community to work to defeat the proposal. The Charter change would give an unfriendly mayor the power to reverse the advancements the gay community has enjoyed over the past decade, he said. "Right now we have a mayor who supports and appreciates the community," Oakley said. "Next time, we might not." Under the proposal, the mayor would have the power to hire and fire department heads and to appoint commission and board members. Many members of the GLBT community sit on boards and commissions thanks to appointments from council members. Miller said she believes the proposal will pass because the majority of citizens are "tired of the status quo." Some of Miller's former suppor...

"It took me a year in and out to finally surren- der," said Miles, 34, who also attends the Lambda group of Alcoholics Anonymous, anoth- er gay support group. Miles said that he lost his job and everything else when he regularly used crystal methamphet- amine. "When I started using crystal, within two or three months I was totally and completely addict- ed to it," Miles said. "I was homeless within three years' time, in and out of shelters and living under bridges." Miles said most of the addicts he has encoun- tered are in their 20s and 30s, but he has seen people in the gay community as old as 50 and 60 addicted to the drug. Randy Martin, program director for the Pride Institute of Texas, said the opening of the new gay support group encourages treatment providers. the ordinance because, "My feeling is that there doesn't need to be special consideration made for homosexuality. Muller, a 26-year-old grant writer, received national attention for her race because of the can- didacy of Jael Phelps, a 20-year-old nursing stu- dent. Jael Phelps said she didn't mind the focus on her church's anti-gay picketing or its attempt to repeal the anti-discrimination ordinance. Muller, however, was frustrated because issues normally prominent in city races, such as creating jobs, weren't debated. And, Muller said, "There is never a final bat- tle between the Phelpses and the gay communi- ty."' The Human Rights Campaign, the Washington-based gay rights group, said approval of the Phelps-backed proposal would have made Topeka the only American city with an ordinance blocking anti-discrimination poli- cies for 10 years. The ballot measure was pat- terned after a Cincinnati ordinance adopted in 1993 but repealed last year. Last year, after the city council appoin...
