Prof. Riley, of Missouri,lias accep- ted the position as entomologist to the agricultural department. The new counterfeit dollar can only be detected by weight. It con- tains sixty-eight grains less silver than the genuine. The Indian office has ordered the removal of the Apache Indians to the Southern Ute agency. They will start on the tenth instant. Gould, the city directory man of St. Louis, estimates that the popula- tion of that city increased during 1S77, and is now over half a million. He bases his conclusion on "a care- ful computation of the number of heads of families." The Wellfieet, Massachusetts, sav- ings bank, with deposits of $122,- 163, and the South Boston savings bank, with deposits amounting to $1,565,962, have been placed under the restrictions of the new savings bank law. The second fight between the bull and lion, at San Antonio, did not come off Sunday, as was announced, but has been postponed for a few days. The lioness is recovering. The Dallas Herald says a young man named II. C. Buckingham, was drugged at a saloon, near the Union Depot, Tuesday evening, and subse- quently relieved at the depot while in a stupor, of his pocket book con- taining thirty dollars. There is no doubt James Lapage, hanged at Concord, N. II., for the murrder of Josie Langmaid, outrag- ed and murdered Mrs. Fourtie and daughter, at Alexandria, Canada, ten years ago.
