Cowen publishes a card denonneing & feport which had been pat in circulation that he was command* of a Mtgro registeut in the late war, Ma falsehood and slander, and the originator a wilful and ma- licious liar. • . . The Theatre on Monday night was crowded. It was by long odds the heaviest house ever assembled on a similar occasion in Texas. The dress circle could, not have held many more; even the gallery was not without its complement. The ladies formed a large portion of the audi- ence. Our people show a strong dis- position to0UBtain the theatre. If is universally desired among them that it should be a complete success. They would even, were it necessary, strain a point to do so. This ought to en-, courage the company to put forth the very best that is in them;. Let them' not think once that anything will do for a Houston audience.' Such think- ing has been the spoiling of other at- tempts here in that line. Some actors nave been here who imagined that they w...

TTT-r THE CITY. We sometimee receive through the mails some wonderful documents. One received Friday evening, writ- ten in i beautiful female hand and exquisitely scented with atar of roses, runneth aa follows: My darling Local: One of your captives will wail for you to-night at the corner of and streets, after the theatre breaks up, say 121 o'clock. Have a care for this request and be sure to oome. Lovingly, As Admikek. Houston, Friday evening. We didn't go. We are as fond of romance as most people and will go as far to obtain it; but a street corn- er at the-dedRe«t hour of night don't suit us. Besides, we hardly think this damoiselle is after the style which digs into our heart. A couple of rose bushes to do the courting under might have done: but a muddy street corner In the pitchiest night for a gentleman of delicate taste andfanev! What a proposition! ;The Houston Hook^nd Ladder Company will have a procession on Tuesday next which will be in order as follows: Order mf Pr«t"ion...
