I 1# i ! i POPULATION 5,000. Vol. IV.—No. 32. Thurber, Texas: Saturday, February 24, 1900. Whole No. 188 FOREIGN AND DOMESTIC NEWS NOTES AND COMMENT Some names effectually bar their owners from Presidential tickets, regardless of brains and merit. Manila is being rapidly Americanized. It has more than 400 saloons; almost as many as Washington has. They are singing "Willie, we have missed you," to Honora- ble William Jennings Bryan as he tours the South. Now that the Senate has a Bard, the Congressional Record may contain something poetical without quotation marks. , If the Kentucky Legislators can devise an anti-gun law, and make it stick, they will atone for many of Kentucky's sins. Copies of this paper may be found on file at the office of our Washington correspondent, E. G. Siggers, 918 F. Street, N. W., Washington, D. C. --■ ¡ Porto Ricans are liable to differ as to the relief they will get by the bill imposing a 25 per cent, duty on their products sent to the United States. ; T...

TEXAS M1NJNO AND TRADE JOURNAL. GULF & BRAZOS VALLEY. Road to Be Constructed Frosn Peck City to the Gulf V!a the County Seat of Lrath. ERATH COUNTY is to have another line of railroad—the extension of the Gulf & Brazos Valley. Stephenville and Erath County have worked hard to secure this line to tap Stephenville en route from Mineral Wells and Peck City, on the main line of the Texas & Pacific, to the Gulf. A citizens' committee of Stephenville and President Squires held a meeting in Stephenville last Saturday with the following result, as given by the "Erath Appeal" in an extra edition printed on Monday, February 19: " At a meeting held Saturday afternoon in the office of Mayor James Collins, the Citizens' Committee, composed of Mayor Col- lins, Lee Young, J. H. Cage, Otho S. Houston, J. W. Jarrott and W. R. McClellan, closed the deal with Colonel W. A. Squires, to have Stephenville placed on the line of the Gulf & Brazos Val- ley railroad. TEXAS MINING AND TRADE JOURNAL. 3 ERATH COUNTY X IC\\ S NOTES [from stephenyille exchanges.] From the Appeal, February 16. The city of Stephenyille, not including its bond indebtedness, does not owe one cent. The Executive Committee of the People's party of Erath county met in the courthouse February 12 and decided to put a full ticket in the field. This makes Erath sure of two full tick- ets, and there is a strong probability of an independent ticket being put in the field. The news comes of the unanimous election of Judge Parker by the Hamilton bar to preside over the regular term of the District Court there during Judge Straughan's indisposition. Some of the most difficult murder cases are to be tried, and the election of Judge Parker speaks volumes for the confidence the Hamilton bar has in him. As items of political local news the Appeal gathers that the Republican County Executive Committee of, Erath counfy met last week and determined to support a citizens' proportional repre...

It is announced from London that sixteen battleships and eight armored cruisers, besides smaller vessels, are armed only with short range muzzle-loaders. TEXAS MINING AND TRADE JOURNAL. FLASHES OF THOUGHT. BY. PROF. D. S. LAND1S. In the vaults of life all things are Deified. Nature is the portrait gallery of the Divinity. Honesty is consistency, but virtue is all things. A regret is a mock prayer whose Deity is dead. Beauty is the unobtrusive moonflower of virtue. Conformity tries to blend a Judas with the Christ. Will is the name of the key that will open all locks. Youth lives in to-morrow, age dwells in its yesterdays. Brains and desponding whimperers are never bedfellows. The mind that makes not its own music marches but poorly. The love we offer life is the light by which we read the In - visible. Who awakens his Thor, his Woden or his Osiris has awaken his life. Fables were made that a man might see himself as others see him. Who cries out in the name of humanity cries out to both Hell and Heaven. The indignation of the ignorant is more to be dreaded than the wrath of Kings. That book is great which has both veins and arteries ...
