BSUReligious Activities 1 Seize the day by Rick Schochler In the few installments of this column I have usually tried to establish a moral or end with a piece of advice. This past week I have had to deal with worries of several kinds in my personal life. These worries have led me to once again try to live by the phrase "seize the day." There are so many opportunities and chances that come our way that we might miss them if we are caught up in worry. So my advice to you advice that I must take myself is to live for today only to gel all I can out of this day and to not put off until tomorrow what I can do today. Resolve to accomplish the goal you have set for yourself; it is better to try and fail than to not try at all. Choose this day to better your studies; choose this day to ask that certain person out; choose this day to be thankful for what you have; choose this day to be excited about living; choose this day to serve the Lord. TYPING: Term papers $1.25 per page. Same day servi...

I Faculty Lette r War strongly opposed by Bob Howell 1 am writing this letter to voice my strong opposition to the U.S. involvement in the war in the Persian Gulf region. My reasons for so strongly opposing this war aie listed below. One of our stated purposes for being involved in this war is for economic reasons. This can quite simply be restated as deaths for money. This is morally reprehensible under any circumstances. A second stated purpose is to insure the continued flow of oil from that region. We should not be sacrificing the lives of our young people to prop up a resource that will be depleted possibly within our lifetimes and certainly within the lifetimes of our children. We should be seeking to strengthen the use and availability of non-polluting and renewable energy sources rather than underwriting a few large oil companies. Again money in exchange for lives. A third stated reason for our involvement is to end the aggression of Saddam Hussein toward his neighbors. In l...

Vol. 78 No. 16 Feb. 13 1991 Student Voice of Har din-Simmons University Admissions finds new ways to recruit students by Leigh Ann Whiddon The admissions office has several programs in operation to recruit students. High School Round-Up a bi-annual program for high school students will be March 8 and 9. Rene' Maciel director of admissions said they anticipate an attendance of 300 students and parents. A group of HSU alumni from the DallasFt. Worth area have chartered a bus to bring students up for the weekend. "Because of that we are hoping to draw more students from that area.. .to the campus" Maciel said. High school students will have the opportunity to meet with admissions and financial aid and to attend mock classes. A highlight of the weekend will be a Morgan Cryer concert. An ongoing admissions project is the "HSU Posse." Maciel said "The program is really a chance for students to bring us prospective names...If they bring us 15 names they become a part of the posse if they b...

Richard's Nameless Column Christianity requires growing by Richard Ruane When I came to HSU I was an 18-year-old theatre major who wanted to go into missions. I was an obnoxiously dogmatic and boorishly denominationalistic Southern Baptist. My idea of Bible study was getting the Bible to say what I wanted. My idea of prayer was getting God to do what I wanted. Spirituality meant one prayed and read the Bible once a day and went to church on Wednesday night and twice on Sunday. Giving meant tithing: theology meant reading the complete works of C.S. Lewis. The New Testament church was Southern Baptist and the Catholics charismatics fundamentalists Mormons and Methodists were somewhere out in left field if not downright wrong. By the end of that year my shallow spirituality had failed me at every turn. I had developed a crush on a charismatic and was avidly reading numerous Catholic authors. Two upperclassmen sophomore Monica Tinney and junior Beth Smith had taught me much through my p...

I Editorials j U.S. troops need our support by Carey Alderson As days turn into weeks and weeks turn into months American men and women deployed to Saudi Arabia in our government's fight with Iraq are not loosing their will to fight but their morale. The soldiers in the field on the lines in the air and on the sea are all aware of the protesting complaining and debating back here at home. It would be stupid to think or pretend that Americans are united behind today's war because they are not. As the fighting continues the question remains about whether or not the US did what it could to avoid this war. Does the freedom of our democracy allow or even require us to print paint or shout our doubts towards the war in a parade up and down the street? Many people tend to think that protesters encourage Saddam Hussein prolong the sufferings of war and demoralize the many called to conflict. If you were to talk to most of the nay sayers and the objectionists they would tell you "No blood fo...

CAC needs student input by Kevin Burfield The first activity by the Cowboy Activities Committee this year was having a ventriloquist appear at freshman orientation. A dunking booth was sponsored by the group at the annual Fall Fest and movies and concerts were organized or sponsored by the group. These included Always at the Paramount and the music of Mylon & Broken Heart and Bruce Carroll. A new event started was a Tailgate Party which was held after the HSUMcMurry football game. CAC hopes to have more participation at next year's party. The spring semester began with the Blizzard of Bucks on Jan. 30. Upcoming events include a comedian the movie Ghost at the Paramount a "Gotcha" Tournament after spring break and possibly another appearance of Music Video Television. Coleen Nihill who served as president in '89 and '90 and is still a corresponding member explained that the Cramer Agency from Chicago calls Brian Bluhm a faculty sponsor of the group and offers an event that may be...

Noises On The Page Letters policy suspended by Duane Simolke Many students do not seem to understand the concept of "letters" in a publication; letters are written by people other than the publication's writers giving those people a chance to express their individual views. Note those last two words: individual viewsnot the views of the editor or whoever publishes or sponsors the paper (in this case HSU). There is a disclaimer on the first or second page of most publications that clarifies that; see our credits box on page two. Publishing a letter expressing someone else's views is no more the same as holding those views than teaching history is to approve of the actions of every historical figure or liking a war movie is to want to kill people. One of the functions of a newspaper is to represent the views of its main audience (in our case the students). These views differ I could not possibly agree with them all. I do not have anything against the football team or the Computer Lab....

Letters from page 3 against the war that does not beg the question.) An argument "begs the question" when it addresses ANOTHER issue however subtle. A "strawdolT basically sets up a weaker definition or representation of a particular issue in order to defeat it. This is done by usually being too simplistic or misrepresenting the true facts. The first reason that Howell gives for his opposition to the war is that it is "deaths for money." This is a "strawdoll" since it is an extremely simplistic restatement. It is wise to admit that economic reasons could be taken as a whole with other motivations and these motivations may be stronger. Secondly "deaths for money" is a simplistic view of the economics involved. Economics is more than acquisition of real estate and fossil fuels. It is also the distribution of vital commodities in which real estate and fuel are only one interestwhich indirectly affects the economies of the world not just the United States. The problem is that economic c...

The phonathon raises thousands of dollars for the Loyalty Fund which gives financial assistance to qualifying students. The event not only gives students the opportunity to help other students but also gives alumni the chance to find out what has been happening lately at HSU. The event formally named the Rupert N. Richardson Memorial Phonathon originated in 1979 by James Teel assistant vice president for development who visited several other university phonathons to raising stu determine what it would actually take to organize a successful phonathon for HSU. The phonathon is different from other fundraisers in that the donations given by the alumni "do not offset the cost of the phonathon" said Margaret Hoogstra organizer of the event. Every donation goes toward the Loyalty Fund for HSU stude...

Non-traditional StudentLj Rules are all broken by John Carroll This being a writer for The Brand is really weird. Guess what the editor gave me for Christmas after I wrote all of those articles? Nope; he did not send a gift certificate. He sent a set of rules about how to write correctly for a newspaper 21 rules to learn and use. I think he must have been reading one of my stories when he made these rules up. Have you ever been in church and just knew the preacher was preaching to you? Kind of creepy isn't it? Like how did the preacher know what we did last Friday night? Why is the editor picking on me? I am the only writer they have who has broken every rule on the list. God only gave Moses ten rules. How come you had to add 21 more Duane? 31 rules is a lot to remember. On top of that I do not like all of your rules especially not rule number nine "Don't use contractions. " By the way sports fans that is a direct quote. The man said not to use contractions and used one himself. Pra...

Model UN team seeking funds t by Duane Simolke The Hardin-Simmons National Model United Nations Team will be making a trip to New York City on March 24-30 for the annual national competition in which it placed among the top ten per cent last year earning Honorable Mention from the governing board. Though one of only three teams in the national competition HSU's team will compete against 160 schools from North America Europe and Asia including schools such as Harvard and West Point The team has also received awards at the ' West Texas Model UN competing against regional schools. The stated purpose of the group is "to foster an increase in student understanding of world politics to refine public speaking and debating skills and to represent Hardin-Simmons University in such a way as to increase the visibility of the exemplary liberal arts education offered at HSU." The current members are diverse in career plans and majors and have shown leadership skills in various areas. For example...

E ditorials L Lab assistants are helpful by John Carroll I found a recent letter to the editor about the Computer Lab to be very negative. I would like to say a few positive words if I may. I am very proud that all HSU students may use the computer lab even those who are not business or computer majors. Many colleges only allow people who have paid a lab fee and are enrolled in courses related to the computer lab to use the equipment Because I take computer courses write for The Brand and do all my written papers in the computer lab I spend a lot of time there. I would like to tell you what I have observed. I have found lab assistants to be very helpful and polite. When they are busy I have seen other computer students help those who need help even though they are not on duty. Many times I have seen students who were not computer majors helping other students. Never have I seen a more thoughtful group of people than I have witnessed here at HSU. I have never played a game on one of ...

Student Letter L Opinions should be informed by Tim Lewallen After reading the Feb. 6 issue of The Brand I was shocked and amazed at the opinions expressed by some of the students at HSU when asked how they would solve the crisis in the Persian Gulf. While everyone in America is entitled to his or her own opinion opinions should be based on fact and knowledge in order to be relevant or to be taken seriously. Consider the option of using nuclear weapons. The nuclear bomb is not a magic wand that when waved will end all the strife and hardships of the war. The blast and fallout would affect soldiers and civilians alike. And once a nuclear weapon has been used the area affected as well as the people is contaminated for quite a few years. Cancer and birth defects rose sharply in the population of Hiroshima and Nagasaki years after the war was over. You can't simply walk back in after a nuclear blast has flattened a city and rebuild it. The only thing that could live there would be roach...

of Texas recognizing the efforts service and endurance of HSU. Gary McCaleb mayor of Abilene presented a proclamation of Feb. 19 as HSU Day. "We are all awarded by the many and varied contributions your university brings to our city" he said. During his closing comments Fletcher read a letter from President Bush congratulating HSU on its centennial birthday. He also read a letter from a recent HSU graduate who is now serving in the Middle East and who often thinks of the people he encountered at HSU and their impact on his life. Fletcher said "It's been a long wonderful year trying to celebrate what our founders imagined. We draw our strength from those who dreamed before us. We want this to mark not the end of 100 years but the beginning of all the promise built into this institution." Fletcher noted that God has always provided for HSU and that many people have worked hard and sacrificed to keep HSU alive and continually growing. ft va f . have done an exceptionally good job. The cast not only carried off the basics like their convincing Brittish accents or good comedy timing but worked amazingly well as an ensemble. Daylen Gallman $ does an excellent job as Lloyd Dallas the frustrated director of "Nothing On." He is matched by the energy and naivette of Christy Stanlake playing Poppy Norton-Taylor the show assistant stage manager. Compliments also go to Eric Logan for his deadpan delivery in the role of Tim Allgood and to Lauri Phillips as the actress Belinda Blair for a commendable performance. This show marks the HSU stage debut of many of the performers. If we can expect this quality in the future then there are many great things to come. BSUReligious Activities Walls must be broken by Rick Schochler I had the pleasure of attending the Cornerstone Luncheon in which the Rev. Dan Yeary (Cornerstone Series lecturer) spoke. I had anticipated the usual luncheon but found instead a question proposed to Yeary that took up the majority of the question answer time allotted. The question was more or less this: Why is it that there are so many "walls" and so many labels on this campus? The question struck me profoundly because it is something that had concerned me for some time now. Our goals as a Chr...
