Page 1C Feature Section TV-addicted children need more supervision By Willard Abraham, Ph.D. Copley News Service Q. I am concerned about our children's eyesight because of their TV watching. They are young (3 and 5 years old), but if their current habit continues I am afraid their eyes will suffer. They both get up very early, and head for the TV set. When we get up and make breakfast they have already been at it for an hour or two. Then, except for the time the> are in preschool or school, it is a continuous involvement until they go to bed at night. My husband says it is a relief to have them occupied like that, but even though I agree with him, I wonder about the danger to their eyes. If you share my concern, what suggestions do you have for cor- recting the situation'' A. The dangers may be as ex- tensive as you suspect. You might want to talk about this issue with your pediatrician or family physi- cian. However among other ap- proaches you could consider are these: • Schedu...

The most important change noted is staggered starting times, with high schools holding classes from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.; mid- dle schools from 8:50 a.m. to 3:50 p.m.; and elementary schools from 8:10 a.m. to 3:10 p.m. All schools open supervised doors at 7:15 a.m. The staggered times were deemed necessary by the GISD board in June in order to save about $900,000 in bus expenses. Motorists are warned to ob- serve increased hours in school zones, with 20-mile-per-hour speeds in effect as early as 7 a.m. and as late as 4:20 p.m. Two new schools, Lyles Middle School and Shugart Elementary School, have a combined enroll- ment this year as Shugart was not ready to open its doors Tues-...

Page 5 Police Solve Case Of Missing License Plates The case of the missing license plates was cleared up this week when Lt. Gary Coop an- swered a call on bike theft from a white male juvenile in the 2600 block of Herring Circle. During the investigation, Lt. Coop was invited inside the sus- pect's home in the 2700 block of Ingram. There he noticed a col- lection of some 10 license plates. Questioning of the juvenile pro- duced a full confession and because the subject was coop- erative and even told officers where the plates were stolen, no charges were filed.
