Under The Roof-Tree. [Newspaper Article] — Riverina Times, Hay Standard and Journal of Water Conservation — 20 December 1900

Under Tlie Roof-Tree. * From grave to gay — from lively to 1 severe.' I (By Dedorah.) Christmas is again in our midst. The one great? almost universal festi val. Tlie joytiine of each year, and we will turn our thoughts a little to its origin. It wa? inaugurated as a festi val in the year 98, but it was not un til the year 137 that Pope Telesphor ous, in the reign of Antoninus Pius ordered its annual observance on De cember 25, which then fell 011 the day we now call the sixth of January. Amongst -the Saxons this joyous time was called. ' Yule-tide' and really meant the Festival of the Sun, Yule being one of their names for the Sun. In the countries of Scandinavia it was the greatest festival, and Yule bonfires blazed to scare .the witches and wizards ; and pork, meat, and ale abounded. ?Great fires were kindled in the huge .chimneys, and the blazing of the yule log is supposed to have been intended to signify the light and heat of the sun. DON'T OVER-EAT. [Newspaper Article] — Riverina Times, Hay Standard and Journal of Water Conservation — 24 December 1900

DON'T OVER-EAT. Nothing tends to the injury of brain workers so greatly as over-eating. Many active brain workers have suddenly broken down, and fancied it was due to , brain fatigue, when as a matter of fact it was due to overrating. Tbe furnace with the, mnnhitiu oomes clogged with ashes and carbon in various shapes and forms. Nervousness follows thia excessive clogging, and the general system gets out of order.

LADIES' COLUMN. A SMALL DANCE. [Newspaper Article] — Riverina Times, Hay Standard and Journal of Water Conservation — 24 December 1900

INDIES' COLUMN. A SMALL DANCE. No form of entertainment gives so much pleasure to young people as a dance, and although it means the dismantling of one room, still this must be looked upon as only temporary. Invitations are sent out just in the same manner as for a garden party, with the exoeption that the word ' -fa.nc.iTip1 * io substituted for 4 tennis.' It is a great mistake to overcrowd the room, as this spoils dancing for all ; from eight to ten couples is a good number for a moderately sized room. The drawing-room, as a rule, lends itself best .for dancing, since the furniture, being less cumbersome than that of the dining-room, is more easily carried out, and a drawing-room floor often has polished boards. All the furniture, low brackets, and pictures must be removed, and, should the room be very small, it will be found a good plan to take down the door, and drape the aperture prettily with art muslin. If there is no gas, the best and safest way of lighting the room is by ha...

SCIENCE. HEALTH CHATS. [Newspaper Article] — Riverina Times, Hay Standard and Journal of Water Conservation — 24 December 1900

80IfciN0E. HEALTH CHATS. In newspapers we frequently read ac counts of cases of food-poisoning, many of which, unfortunately, have a fatal result. Such cases are specially interest ing to all who have the care et houses, and to all who are in any way concerned , with the preparation of the domestic food I SUDPlv. It is. thpmfarA nf I tance to everybody that something should be known concerning the causes of such fatalities, and also regarding the means which it may be possible to take by way of preventing their occurrence. In the first place it may be well to note that the usual explanation given of the cause of food-poisoning ailments is that they are the result of the body being poisoned by certain substances to which the general name of ptomaines has been given. These poisons are of a very subtle nature, and occur in decaying meat and like matters. But we shall not be very far wrong if we assumo tha£ to germ-life and its work, directly or indirectly, the food-poisonings we hear o...

THUS FOGS ARE MADE. [Newspaper Article] — Riverina Times, Hay Standard and Journal of Water Conservation — 24 December 1900

THUS FOGS ARE MADE. I London is noted all the worid over for the ineomparable exeellence of its fogs. They are simple in themselves. A little soot, a little water, suspended at a certain numbed of feet., and you have your fog. Luckily, however, there are conditions which t'ogd are bound to observe. * Beiore a tog can collect, says a meteorologist, 'there must be a still air, saturation of the atmosphere within a moderate distance of the gronnd, and an absence of clouds. The basis of most London fogs is the damp mist of early merning. If people gave the sun time to disperse this mist all would be well, bat at about six o'clock a million or so of fires are lighted, and the soot mixeB with particles of water, and a horrible fog results/

DON'T LIKE TO BE THOUGHT RICH [Newspaper Article] — Riverina Times, Hay Standard and Journal of Water Conservation — 24 December 1900

DON'T LIKE TO BE THOUGHT RICH 'You would -imagine/ remarked the manager of a branch bank in a country village the other day, ' that most people with a little spare cash would be rather proud than otherwise to be seen entering a bank for the purpose of drawing some money or adding to their account. This. however, is not my experience, in this out-of-the-way place, at all events. The majority of our customers are persons in small way, and, as everybody knows everybody, there is scarcely a man who dofls not try to conceal the fact that he has a little capital at his back. ' This may seem a strange statement to make, but the explanation is that the vil lagers are afraid that if they get the reputation of having a banking account they will be besieged by borrowers. The , manner in which they do business with I us is moat amusing. There is one man | who, although he has been a customer for years, has never ence set foot inside the bank proper. I live over th» bank offices ; consequently, ...

RAILWAY OFFICIALS HAVE WOES. [Newspaper Article] — Riverina Times, Hay Standard and Journal of Water Conservation — 24 December 1900

RAILWAY OFFICIALS HAVE WOES. * Did yoa ever meet a man who didn't know more about how to ran a railway than a railway manager P' said a leading official ot one of our great lines to the writer recently. 4 1 am sure I never did* In the eyes of the public we railway people can do nothing right, and really I think that it would be of advantage if Bome of our difficulties could be adver tised, tor tno persistent manner in which outsiders abuse the companies for doing this and hot doing that shows that they have not the faintest notion of the diffi culties we have to contend with. ' Not one person in a thousand realises what immense labour the running of a big lailway entails. You may scarcely credit what I am going to tell you now, but it is a fact that we send out some thing like 20,000 letters a day and receive about 10,000. Think what an army of clerkB we have to retain for this depart ment alone. All the letters that come to hand by the morning delivery have to be opened and sorted ...
