Great Fire at Warragul. SIX SHOPS DESTROYED £12,000 WOItTH OP PROI'ERtY CONSUMED. A serious cnulagratioti occurred in Warragul on Tuesday evening, about 9 p.m., resulting in the total distruction of a whole block of buildings in Queeu street. The fire originated in M[r F. Zahner's shop, and a few minutes saw the block of buildings in a flame. The buildings being all wooden the devouring element spread witlh surprising rapidity, and had the fire originated in the dead of night, the general opinion is that loss of life would have taken place. The following are the buildings destroyed : Pearson and \illey, wholesale and retail grocers, whose entire stock of goods was completely destroyed, and was only covered by insurances to thi extent of about £1,500 so that the firm will be heavy losers ; as will also MrD. Conner the owner of the buildings. F. Zahner watchmlaker, and G. WVittman, plumber and ironmonger, lost the whole of their stocks. The insurances on both amount ing in the aggrega...

Cruelty to Animals. [Newspaper Article] — Morwell Advertiser — 15 December 1888

Cruelty to Anialls. The seventeenteenth annual report of the Victorian Society for thle protection of animals coimes opportunely at a gracious season, when, too, the gracinousness of our Victorian physical nature, which enables its to extract increased happiness from our material resources, shoulnr prompt all prosperous people to soften hard blows, hard treatment and hard fare among animals as well as mankind; All com imunities are liable to fall. at one or other period, into a habit of treating the lower animals, in some particulars, very un justly. Everywhere, in times past, there have been groundless tradition and lre scriptions governing the course- plr need towards dunb beasts,. and very mulch to their detriment. It is no calumniation to say of Australians in general that, for a -long 'time, they were as ordinarily harsh as any otlier people in their ways to their bruto dependents. They .. could claim only the negative praise of not standing alone in thel world in a had fashion...

Mr. Draffin's Little Lecture. [Newspaper Article] — Morwell Advertiser — 15 December 1888

Mr. Draffin's Little Lecture. Under this heading a letter appears in   our contemporary the "Victorian Farmers' Gazette" from Mr. John Draffin, in which he takes the Gazette pretty severely to task for some editorial remarks which   lately appeared in its columns, dealing with Mr. Chas. Sargeant and the wheat bounty question. Mr. Draffin is pretty well known in this district and is understood to be a likely candidate for a seat in Parliament at the next elections. Hence his utterances are not altogether devoid of interest at the present juncture. We   are not quite sure that we thoroughly understand some portions of Mr. Draffin's "little lecture," but we are sure that he means well. His letter is a plea for the extension of courtesy even to political opponents and as such is worthy of commendation. The Gazette totally denies Mr. Draffin's "soft impeachment," and   claims that it has never transgressed the bounds of the most decorou...
