THE WEATHER. [Newspaper Article] — The Raleigh Sun — 18 March 1898

THE WEATHER. There has lately been an awful uncertainty about the operations of tile clerk of the weather, and if it was not generally known that he is a fixture in a prohibition district, people would be sorely tempted to believe he ' had 'em.' The excessive heat of one day is rapidly converted into cold for the next day, and: tiie bide Sky of yesterday assumes such a lowering aspect for to-day' that one never knows precisely until the day is over what sort of a day it will be. The various weather .prophets around have exhausted all their meteorological knowledge in explaining the whyness of these, sudden transitions, amLjust vvhen they are assuring you that it will be fine weather, a gentle shower flicks all the starch out of their remarks. Likewise, when they predict rain the opposite occurs. The formation of a Weather Boycotting League is on the tapis. The principal, and only, rule will affirm that whoever mentions the weather, respectfully, ordisrespeclfully, in the presence of...

IN THE RIVER. [Newspaper Article] — The Raleigh Sun — 18 March 1898

IN THE RIVER. The Uev.'T. D. Evans and Mr. G. J. Hen derson had rather an Unpleasant experience last Sunday. Mr. Henderson started to drive Mr. Evans' to North Arm, to hold service there, but they had only proceeded as fur as the river when trouble overtook them. The river was running a banker, and when they reached the middle of tho stream one of the horses refused to go tarther. Coaxing, whip ping, praying, etc., were of no avail; until from pure cussedness he made a plunge and broke the traces. Some boys swam to the rescue with another pair, and after being in the middle of the river, with the water about eighteen inches of water in the buggy, for fully an hour, they got safely on the other side. Needless lo say, there Was no service at North Arm that day, and won't lie, as fai ns the iieV. T. D. Evans is concerned, when the river is running high.

THE DORRIGO. [Newspaper Article] — The Raleigh Sun — 18 March 1898

THE DORRIGOj dun correspondent writes under date March 13 : — Very heavy rains fell here last week, flooding the creeks to their banks. . . I have the pleasure of announcing the arrival of another selector, and of wishing him all prosperity. This gentleman drove up from the Bellinger, and he complained, as all who have travelled this road do, of the terrible crossim? at Rockv Creek. Now. Mr. Editor. the money has been granted for the erection of a bridge over this creek for a considerable time, and why is there such delay in carrying out the work ? The increasing trafHcon this route surely warrants the immediate con struction of, this bridge. . . The potato .crops on the Dorrigo this year excel all pre vious yields, such a fact endorsing the opin ions of many that the Dorrigo will be classed among the leading potato producing localities of the colony.
