' Bolshevik sympathisers effected a wholesale release of , prisoners from gaol on the night of December 31 at Pmsk. They liberated 205 prisoners, in clu&iiig members of the Bolshevik Constituent Assembly. The release «-as effected witn the connivance of 11011 commi6siont'd. officers, of: the guard, and eintranee to the provincial prison was gained. . Among the released were 134 political prisoners. Twelve soldiers were court - martiallcd and shot by the Omsk Government . for complicity in the affair.

(Biga, on the Dvina, was the capi tal of Livonia, and the third seaport oj Russia, prior to the war. -Its popula tion was then 350,000. Vilna. 011 the Vilia, is 430 miles south-west of Petro grad. Its population was 1SS.OOO just, before the war. Recently this district has been the scene of much lighting.)
