Execution at Castle-Hill. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Gazette and New South Wales Advertiser — 2 October 1803

Execution at Castle-Hill On Monday last John Lynch and James Tracey, on Friday the 23d instant Condemned to suffer death, were removed from the gaol at Sydney, and sent to Parramatta, where they remained until Tuesday morning. At seven o'clock the Malefactors were taken out   of the Parramatta gaol, and under an escort proceeded to Castle Hill, the place appointed for their Execution; where the Reverend Mr.   Marsden attended, finally to prepare them for their approaching destiny. One of the unhappy men, Lynch, seemed sensibly affected at his situation; and with a   fervor suited to his circumstances, attended to   the exhortations of the Minister, acknowledg- ing himself guilty of the offence he was about to expiate. Tracey, on the contrary, assumed an air of sullen hardihood, denied his being accessory to the fact of which he had been convicted, and   reproached the penitent, whose deportment was contrasted to his own.   Shortly before the ...

SHIP NEWS. On Thursday arrived the Dart brig. of     London. Capt. McLennan, last from Norfolk       Island, being only 25 days on her passage from       Otaheite to this Port.     In this Vessel His Honor Lieutenant Governor   FOVEAUX arrived from Norfolk Island           in a very bad state of health, having for some time past been afflicted with a violent asthma.       Having His EXCELLENCY's previous       Permission to leave the Island, he took the   opportunity of the Dart's coming here, leaving   the Government and Command with Captain R. WILSON, of the New South Wales Corps.   We are happy to learn that every thing is very thriving on that Island; Crops were a promising appearance of yielding their usual plentiful increase; Swine are now more     abundant than ever, owing to the last year's   plentiful crop of Maize. Execution. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Gazette and New South Wales Advertiser — 9 October 1803

Execution. Last Friday fo'night Thomas McLaugh-   lane ( distinguished by the appellation of the Elder McLaughlane), was removed from Parramatta to Hawkesbury, there to suffer   the Sentence of the Law; and about five in     the evening was lodged in a place of security near the New Store, and there attended by       the Rev. Mr. Dixon, Minister of the Church of Rome. At nine on Saturday morning the   then unhappy criminal was taken from his       last confinement to the place of Execution at the Green Hills, near the back of the Old Store. In his latter moments he conducted himself with decency and propriety, as he had done during the whole term of his im- prisonment; to the Minister he attended     with fervor, and observed a profound silence. At ten he was given up to the Executioner, and in a few moments after at...

General Orders. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Gazette and New South Wales Advertiser — 9 October 1803

General Orders. FROM the improvident method taken by the First Settlers on the Sides of the   Hawkesbury and Creeks, in Cutting Down Timber and Cultivating the Banks, many Acres of Ground have been removed, Lands inundated, Houses, Stacks of Wheat, and   Stock, washed away by former floods which might have been prevented in some measure if the Trees and other Native Plants had been suffered to remain ; and instead of cut- ting any down to have planted others to bind the Soil of the Banks closer ; and ren- dered them less liable to be carried away by   every inconsiderable Flood ; nor is this the only evil:- - - The Public convenience hav- ing suffered by the numerous large Trees lying in the Stream, and fallen across, ren-   dering water carriage on the Creek, almost   impracticable, and in some Part of the   Hawkesbury very dangerous.     As several Settlers have been, and are now   fixing the Lower Part of the Hawkesbury,   along the Nepean, South Creek, and Georges &...

To the Printer of the Sydney Gazette, [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Gazette and New South Wales Advertiser — 9 October 1803

To the Printer of the Sydney Gazette, Sir,   Some time ago an article in your Paper   respecting the culture of potatoes arrested my attention; and I determined to make           trial of the mode of setting therein advised.   Seeing some potatoes which were then     about to be cooked, with the fibres or shoot     rather long, I carefully scraped away a       number of the eyes, leaving only so much     of the potato attached to it as I supposed   necessary to the preservation of the vega- tative parts; to receive those I prepared a bed purposely, in which I set a couple of rows, but without any further trouble than   is usually requisite, and determined to at- tend strictly to the progress of my little  ex- periment, which, doubtless received much     assistance from the very seasonable rains that   have since fallen. Principally induced by   motives of...

SYDNEY. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Gazette and New South Wales Advertiser — 9 October 1803

S Y D N EY. The Nautilus arrived on Friday last from Hunters River ; she had that morning dispatch- ed her hired boat into Broken-Bay with five   hands, in search of provisions, of which they   had been almost wholly out for several days,   and a strong Southerly wind still rendering   them hopeless of making the Cove. The   Nautilus, however, by dint of HARD BEAT-       ING got in the same evening ; the boat reached no further than Broken-Bay, where   she found a small Hawkesbury FLEET wind- bound. All the assistance here afforded them could only promise a slender sustenance so two, and three of the party formed a resolu-   tion to walk round and leave the boat in charge of a couple of their companions.     Fortunately the boat found her way in on   Sunday evening about five o'clock, and an hour after the pedestrians hailed the vessel     from the North Shore. Her freight con- si...

SHIP NEWS.               The Ship that appeared in sight the 6th.   instant proves to be the Albion. Captain Buncker having sent his Letters ashore stood       off again, and we understand is gone to the         sealing ground of New Zealand. From the Letters arrived by this ship it appears that     the Lady Nelson, which sailed from hence     the 27th of August, arrived at Risdon Cove in         the Derwent, on the 7th of September; and       the Albion arrived the 12th, after a Passage of       12 days, laying three days in Oyster Bay, off   which Captain Buncker was so fortunate to kill       Three large Spermaceti Whales.
