AUSTRALIAN NATIVES' ASSOCIATION. [Newspaper Article] — North Melbourne Courier and West Melbourne Advertiser — 31 January 1896

AUSTRALTAN NATIVES' ASSOCIATION. TicE North Melbourne branch of the above association gave another of their enjoyable Musical Nights on Thursday, 23rd January, after the transaction of the routine business. There was a good attendance, but the extremely hot wea ther kept many away, -including some gentlemen who had promised to assist in the evening's harmony, but for reasons best known to themselves stayed away, thus putting the promoters, Messrs, CtiosbieCoierman,; and-Madden, to no endof bother and delay in re-arranging_ _ the programme. However in spite of tihe adversa circumstances the evening passed off very pleasantly, arid was un doubtedly one of the best yet given by the branch, which is noted for the good quality of its entertainments. Amongst the performers the pride of the.place un doubtedly falls on Miss N. Moroney of Carlton, whose splendid rendering of "The Carnival," and in response to voci ferous applause, "I iwas ,dreaming." This lady who, we believe, made her first...

THE NOVELIST. The Mystery of the Inn; OR, THE DISCOVERY IN THE HIDDEN CHAMBER. STORY OF TREACHERY, CRIME, AND REMORSE. CHAPTER XIX.—CONTINUED. [Newspaper Article] — North Melbourne Courier and West Melbourne Advertiser — 31 January 1896

_THE 1hOELIST>U V The Mystery of the Inn11111 OR, THE DISCOVERY IN THE HIDDEN CHAMBER. STORY OF TREACHERY, CRIME, AND REMORSE. CILIPTER ILX.--Comn?xrD. I, therefore, paused hen I reached the last step above the platform, and listened intently before proceeding further. There was no noise; all was quiet, as a respect abhle house should be at two o'clock in the morning. Yet from the hall below came an undefinabe something owhich made me feel that she was there ; a breathing influence that woke every nervous sensi bility within me, andnmade-tiy-he-art beats so irregular that I tried to stop them, lest my own presence should be be trayed. She was there, a creeping, bale ful fiure, blotting the moonshine with her tall shadow, as she passed, panther like, to and fro before that closed door, or crouched against the wall in the same at titude of listening which I myself as sumed. Or so I pictured her as I clung to the balustrade abover, asking myself how I could cross that strip of moonli...

ROVERS v. MOONEE PONDS. (To the Editor.) [Newspaper Article] — North Melbourne Courier and West Melbourne Advertiser — 31 January 1896

ROVERS v. MOONEE PONDS. (To the Editor.) SIn,-I noticed in your last issue an account of a match played between the Rovers 0.0. and the Moonee Ponds C.C. Will you grant me space for a short reply to what is cer tainly a one-sided and exaggerateds account of a very small dispute. I am a member of one team and have friends in the other, and and I admit that the. Rovers are angels in the cricket field, while the other side are only ordinary mortals. Still the report is so unfair that 1 say the writer of it has never been acquainted with-the truth in any shape or form.. Ihave spoken to some of the Rovers and they deny ady justice hI the report. There was no "Billingsgate" usedi on either side. The Rovers won their matches last season and there was no bloodshed, as antici pated by your report. Yours, &c., A\ TI-?tLIanOGSGATE. FOUNDATION DAY. [Newspaper Article] — North Melbourne Courier and West Melbourne Advertiser — 31 January 1896

FO,UNDAT ON DAY. LAsT Monday the Australian born por tion of the community celebrated what is termed " Australia's National Holiday," although it must be admitted that this cluster of colonies can hardly lay claim at the present stage of its existence, having regard both to its age and its position as a dependency of Great Britain, to the term nation. However, there is no doubt that the Australian is fastacquiringforhinmself a marked individuality ; and as the men who came across the seas roluntarily in the fifties, and laid the foundations of these Southern " Plantations," as they were called in "good King George's gliriousdaysa"passaway, those horn-ontldis soil will inherit the political and social duties their English, Irish, and Scotch fathers first called into existence in this land. The dawn of the next century will see few of the old pioneers in our midst; and every year carries these colo nies nearer the time, and that with re markable swiftness, when Australia will be Austra...
