ARMIDALE. [Newspaper Article] — The North Australian, Ipswich and General Advertiser — 29 April 1856

ARMIDALE. We have received the ArmidaU Erpras of the 12th instant, from which we extract the following items : — Abvidale Gold Pdbchasbs.— We hare been shown a fine parcel of Rocky River pold by Mr. Halinbourg, consisting of 508 ounces, which he bought in about a week's time. We have also been informed, on good authority, that during one dav last week a gentleman in town bought 230 ozs. of Rocky River cold. We understand that about £3 11s. is the pnee usually riven. Govbekment Lan» Saie. — On the 4th instant, forty town allotments at Armidale were submitted to public auction. The attendance of buyers was thin, and the bidding anything but spirited. The majority of the lots were bought at or near the upset price, but towards the close of the Bale some few were disposed of at prices varyingfrom £7 to £13.. We ace informed that the situation of the allotments'*** not' first-rate, which accounts for the low figure at which they were sold.

It is a wonder that some person of capital doe not invest a few liundmd-poiindK in thin town-slii|. by building a few substantial Hliib cottages suitable for. mechanics, &c, to reside in. I can assure yon that it would turn out rather a profitable specula tion in this quarter, for I am credibly informed that if there were twenty or thirty houses vacant, they would all be occupied in less than a week — mere humpies are realizing £25 per annum. There are a. great number of carriers in this district travelling up and down the country, most . of whom have families ; of course, tbese also require dwellings to reside in, and Myall Creek being the more desirable for such, in consequence of its being central. ?- The ^population of the township, I believe, amounts to 1^7, the number of ho...
