STRENGTH OF CRANES. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 12 January 1914

STRENGTH OF CRANES. The publicity given by this journal to the ques tion of the strength of cranes as determined by the N.S.W. Inspector of Scaffolding and Lifts, has been generally appreciated. The official circular, although technically correct, was not altogether plain reading to the majority of those affected by its provisions. But the elucidation of the chief features, and the outspoken criticism by master builders, as solely reported in this journal, helped to clear up man}^ moot points. The general nnininn in tlint t1ir» m-nvi-;inin; will rpnnirr1 tn 1'»f- con siderably relaxed to prove workable. Some go so far as to describe the requirements as absurd in their present condition. All are awaiting the result of the conference of the sub-committee of the Master Builders' Association with the Inspector. This will be held shortly.

THE UNIONS' ULTIMATUM. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 12 January 1914

THE UNIONS' ULTIMATUM. The N.S.W. unionists did not create the furore on Monday last threatened by their federation. According to the official dictum on that day union ists were to refuse absolutely to continue working with non-unionists, and forty-four hours only were to be worked. But Monday came and passed with everyone proceeding on the even tenor of their way. Up to the time of writing nothing untoward has happened, and, despite the published statements, it is not expected that there will be any discontinuance of work. | The Master Builders' Association has a definite ! agreement with the Bricklayers' Union, and another in process of settlement with the Plasterers' Union, which are likely to prevent any precipitate action of I the character indicated. The master builders have i agreed not to obstruct the unions stating a case Yor the decision of Judge Heydoh, while preserving the right to fight it on its merits. This compromise seems to have given general satisfaction, and it i...
