LOCAL ITEMS. [Newspaper Article] — The Elsternwick Leader and District Record — 5 November 1887

' :' LOCAL ITEMS. : tUoL the " Leader" made it its busi. ness to draw special attention to the ijilortance and progress of Elsternwick and Caulfield districts, and furnished regular reports of their council meetings, the latter .were systematically ignored in a quarter, that now, for very obvious reasons, is trying to recover lost ground. NOTES AND COMMENTS. [Newspaper Article] — The Elsternwick Leader and District Record — 5 November 1887

NlOTES AN: ;B Ce1MNETS. - The Public Works Department has accepted the tender of Messrs David Munro and Co. for the erection of the new FallaBridge at:a cost of £44,242 18s 9d. Only colonial made a.gle iron is to be used. In the thinnest of thin houses, on a question of national importance, Mr. Shiels carried the second reading of his' divorce bill on Wednesday evening. As this measure is of such a revolutionary character, and interferes, with a somewhat " free hand," with the very foundations of our social order we trust a majority in the Assembly will insist on the question being remitted to the country for its verdict, or radically modified There are many anomilies in our present divorce laws, we admit, that ought to be removed. The:cost :of :procuring a divorcef unless the applicant sue "in forma pauperism,' is ridiculously excessive. When real, solid grounds for a divorce do exist, the process should be as inexpensive and simple as possible. Laws should be for the benefit of th...

The Influence of Tea, Coffee, and Cocoa on Digestion. [Newspaper Article] — The Elsternwick Leader and District Record — 5 November 1887

27he Iftlucence of Tea, Coffee, and Cocoa on Digestion. Dr. James W. Fraser, in a recent number of the fournal of Anatomy and Ph/ysiology, has recorded the results of an interesting series of experiments on the action of our common beverages on stomachic and intestinal diges tion. The experiments have been mostcare fully arranged from a physical standpoint, and give us some valuable hints on the diges tion of the chief alimentary principles, but they have no bearing, it should be mentioned, on individual variations of human digestion, or on the influence of the various glands in preparing the gastric or intestinal juices. They are, however, of much value in showing ?how standard preparations of the peptic and pancreatic ferments are modified in action when ourordinarydaily beverages areallowed their free action on the digestion of various articles of food. The digestive processes were carefully investigated, and absorption was imitated by a proper dialyzing arrangement. An artificia...
