BAND OF H0P£ CONCERT. A concert and lantern entertain ment was held at the Presbyterian Church on Wednesday evening in aid of the fund of the B.and of Hope.' There was a large attend ance and an enjoyable programme was prepared for the occasion. The first part oonsisted of a lantern show by Mr. C. W. Sullivan. Charge Against an M.L.A. A VERDICT OF GUILTY. At the City Quarter Sessions on ? Thursday, .before Judge Murray, /', Alan Major Millard described as a \ I solicitor and member of Parliament ' pleaded not guilty to an indictment charging him with stealing £5 the property of James Johnson, at Bungendore, on April 5, 1904. Accused, who conducted his own case, mado frequent interjections. On being called to order by his Honor, he apologised. In opening the case for the Crown Mr. Harris said accused had, in his capacity of a solicitor, acted for a Mr. James Johnson, a settler at Bungendore. Johnson had re ceived assistance from the Advances to Settlers' Board. On April 5, 1904, Johnson gave accused, £5 for a certain purpose. Yet accused although he wrote several letters to the Advance to Settlers' Board, in reference to the matter, never paid over the money as directed by Johnson. MOW THE AlELBOURNE CUP WAS WON. The horses having quickly dropped into line at the barrier, probably the smartest despatch ever recor ded in connection with a Mel bourne Cup was effected. Not the slightest trouble was given by any one of the Held, and, thanks to Mr. Watson's quickness of observation, even Emir had no time to indulge in his customary pranks. Seeing the whole 27 dead level, the starter, without a moment's delay, released the burlier, securing an absolutely perfect start. Kosemead was on the rails, with Simoda and Warroo next. Emir occupied the extreme outside, having in order on his near side Canteen. Holler, and Over dale. The first to show iu front was Scott Free, who was quickly supplanted by Maniopoto.
