T East Walloway. November 5. The anniversay of the rPeak Vale Chapel was celebrated on Sunday and Monday, October 30 and 31. Services were conducted on , the' Sunday by the Rev. A. P. Buigesa, who preached in the morning and evening to a large congregation. On the ; succeeding Monday the usual tea took place, which proved to be a thorough snccess, the weather being all that could be desired. The following ladies al>ly presided at the tables and sweetened the . delica ies by their smiles Mesdames Watt and Collins, Misses E. Dreyer, M. Symons, H. Dreyer, A. Dreyer, and E. Roberts. Great praise is due to Misses H. Dreyer and M. Symons for the way in which they so taetefnlly decorated the chapel. Considering the material at hand it was quite a credit to them. Afterwards various games were in dulged in which appeared to make thei old people young again, lifter the tea the meeting was held, which was - pre sided over by Mr. W. Jubilee Demonstration at Laura. [Newspaper Article] — Petersburg Times — 11 November 1887

' Jubilee OeiMOMsiratlon at Laura. ' The residents of Laura decided some ; time ago to hold a grand demonstration in honor of the Queen's Jubilee, and also to celebrate the taking over of the Town Hall (formerly known as the Institute) by the Corporation. Novem ber 9th was the date fixed upon, and it was resolved that the celebration should tak*1 the form of a procession, public sports, and free treat to school children of the neighborhood. An en ergetic committee have been working for some time past, and they have every reason to be satisfied with the great success of the gathering. A procession, coin posed of school j children from Laura, Gladstone, Beeta loo, and Stone Hut, a number of mem bers of the Foresters, Oddfellows and Rechabite Friendly Societies, with the Town Council of Laura, was formed at 10 o'clock at the Town Hall, and paraded the principal streets headed by the Laura .School Baud and a united brass band. Gladstone Flower Show [Newspaper Article] — Petersburg Times — 11 November 1887

Gladstone^ Flower Siioir While "other \ northern townships of smaller 'Size anel/iess importance hold': their^annual agricultural shows, ath letic club meetings and other gatherings of a similar naturb, Gladstone .has been singularly behind an this fespect. A l though successful \ athletic sport's have been held in yearsjgone by, they hav§ not been regularly kept up,\par.tly owing, no doubt, to tlie'general de-J pression in trade, and .partly owing to J the lack of interest taken. As a number of Gladstonians take much interest in the cultivation of flowers it was thought that a Floricultural and Horticultural Society might easily be formed in the township. The matter was actively taken in hatid a few weeks ago, and meetings were held and a society estab lished with a number of influential patrons and officers. A show was held on Saturday last, and for the ffest venture cannot be considered other than a decided success. The walls of the building were richly decorated with palm and ol...

PETERSBURG CORPORATION This was a claim for £21 2s. for extra "work done on contract. The Corporation admitted £7 12s. and for the rest pleaded not indebted. Mr Co pinger appeared for the defence and Mr Wright conducted his own case. Mr Wright stated that he would show that he had done the work charged for and that the amount put down was a reasonable price. _ He submitted, that the Corporation hail no right to plead non-fulfilment of contract as the gum mons was for extras alone, His Honor over-ruled this as he considered that the two items were merged into one. Mr Copinger stated that he would show that the contract on which extras were charged had not been fulfilled, and that some of the work charged for was not authorised. Defendant con fessed judgment for the amount of £.7 12s. 8d., and laid a counter claim against Mr Wright of £ 10 for non...

Commercial. Since our last report a few smalljots of wheat have been offered and bought at 2/8i and 2/8 and for new wheat the price offering for December delivery 2/5 per busheL The reports to hand are not so satisfactory as we should like to hear about the probable yield of the new wheat crop. Many farmers are .complaining that about half of the. heads are blighted, whieh will of course materially affect the yield. Others complain about the depredations of the rabbits which are, on any farm in Cavenagh, clearing the wheat to the extent of about eight acres every night.
