RECOLLECTIONS OF AN OLD COLONIST. [Newspaper Article] — Portland Observer and Normanby Advertiser — 12 March 1914

RECOLLECTIONS OF AN OLD COLONIST. (Br NEato,) In my last letter I described the finding of a long lost survey poe in the mallee country, but it must be remem bered that this was a long time ago. The mallee, which, at the time I spoke of, was in large belts surrounding good patches of pastoral larid, comprised many equ're miles of country. From Dimboola (,it tlhat time called the Nine Creeks) right up to the South Austra lian border, extensive tracts of dense mallee would have to be passed through, the roads, or I should rather say rough tracks, malking the journey, if in a light trap, a rather hutmpy experience, and, ii on horseback, none too safe for quick tiavelling. However, the advent of the mallee roller and the introduction by South Australians of the several stumps jumping implements which had proved such a success in the Tatiara country, have completely altered the face of this at one time a most useless looking land What was then a deep forest of mallee, intersp, rs'd with ...

Cycling. [Conttribued by the Dunlop Tire Company of Australasia] [Newspaper Article] — Portland Observer and Normanby Advertiser — 12 March 1914

Cycling., [Conttrihued by the Dunlop Tire Com patny of Austrulasies] Captain Amunsden, the discoverer of the South Pole, evidently realises the possibi idies of the aeroplane for po!ar exploration, for he has announced his intention of taking two American aeroplanes with him when he leaves San Francisco for the Arctic regions' next June. Both Amunsden' and a member of his staff are taking lessons in aeronautics in France. For his new stabilising device Mr. Orville Wright, one of the brothers responsible for the invention of the aeroplane, has become the recipient of the Collier price awarded by the Aero Club of America for the most valuable advance in tl'e science of aviation made during the present year. An idea of what the motoring in duetry means to day can be gathered from the fact' that in one American motor maunfactulini centre, the city of Detroil, over 70,000 residents ate actively engaged in the various motor factories. In these days of congestcd traffic the followino verse...

WALLACEDALE NORTH. March 9. [Newspaper Article] — Portland Observer and Normanby Advertiser — 12 March 1914

WALLACEDALE NORTH. (From our correspondent. March 9.' A bush fire started yesterday on In vsrary estate .ab about midday and swept across the Branxholmo and MIc arthur roads into a portle n of Inveraly Closer Settlement, whe.e cIn id'rab'e damage was done in the lo ' of grass, plantations and fencing. 1Mr. Frank Kinghorn's house was in great danger, and it seemed as if it must be burtel, but willing bands mnanged to save it. The fire travelled westward, and for a time the settlers' houses were in great danger. However, the continuous ef forts of many of the men were success ful in slopping it at a road between the burning paddocks and the imperilled houses. The ladirs cannot be thanked enough for the manner in which they supplied drink to the men, and also kept a supply of water for the purpose of keeping bags wet. Great credit is due to Messrs. 1). and A. Rhook, who were rrominent in saving much stock. Mr. D. Rhook got a nasty fall while grlloping after some horses, but the in juri...
