Death of tfye Oldest Jew in America. Lazarus Greengard, the oldest Jew in the United States, died la*t month at St. Louis. Had he lived until Nov. 15, he would have completed his 305th year. He was born in Werbelau, Eussian Poland. Old Mr. Green gard was a well read man and had kept abreasi of worldly affairs. It is. an uncommon thing at this day to listen to a man who was a youth of 18 when Napoleon invaded Russia, who re membered the troubled reign of Catherine II. of Russia, and had lived under six Czars, three of whom were assassinated. Six children, thirty- six grandchildren, fifty-eight great grandchildren, and two great - great - grand children survive the old gentleman. — Hebrew Standard. It is said of the late Barney Barnato, the South African king, that he went into the office of a London merchant one day, flung himself down in the chair, and exclaimed, ' It's a hard job to be a millionaire. T^e Rev. Dr. Dattner Jacobson. The Rev. Dr. Dattner Jacobson lectured in the Synagogue Atereth Zwie on Sabbath, Sep tember 4. He eloquently dwelt upon the Zionistic movement, which kept the audience deeply interested. ' It is not mere accident,' he said, ' ? that so great a value is set upon the land of Israel Palestine must be precious to every Jewish heart, not alone for reflecting the original substance of the earliest Judaism, but also because containing within itself the most important historical remembrances of Israel, the fiery speeches of the prophets, the throne of the Jewish kings, the heroism of the Mac cabees, the cradle of the Mishna and Talmud, even the graves of Simeon, Shamai, Hillel, Meir, Tarfon, and Akiba, and of myriads of more heroes and champions of Israel, and sur prising records of past centuries. The Religion of the Hebrews. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 15 October 1897

The Religion of the Hebrews. The Lutheran Standard, of Columbia, Ohio, publishes an extract from the address of the Eev. JL-r. Lyman Abbott, of Brooklyn, delivered before the National Educational Convention at Milwaukee recently, in which that clergyman, replying to those who object to lt teaching: any thing flavored with Hebrew learning in the public schools for fear we get religious,' says : ' We can study all the religions, but not the Hebrew religion. We can talk about gods and goddesses, but not about Jehovah. What ii the Hebrew religion ? It is embodied in this : 1 He that hath clean hands and a pure heart.' From what I learn in the evening papers, I think that if the aldermen of Chicago had been educated in that religion in the public schools, they would not be as they are. . . . ... Justice, mercy, that is the religion of the Hebrews, When I read of two hundred lynchings in this country in the year, when I see tramps increasing on one hand and multi millionaires growing in n...

Free Sons of Israel, Nearly twenty thousand persons were present at the Summner-night's festival of District Grand Lodge No. 1, of the Independent Order of Free Sons of Israel, last month at Sulzer's East River Park. Every lodge in the city and a number of lodges from without had a repre sentation present. The festival was marked by a vaudeville show in the afternoonf and concert given by the band of the Hebrew Orphan Asylum and fife and drum corps of the Hebrew Sheltering Guardian Society. The music dis coursed by these juvenile orchestras was a very attractive feature of the day's enjoyment, reflecting also great credit upon the respective institutions to which they belong. In the evening dancing was indulged in until a very late hour.

FEAST OF THE TABERNACLES. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 15 October 1897

FEAST OF THE TABERNACLES. Sermon by Rev, A. B. Davis iThere was a very large attendance at the Great Synagogue on Monday, the first day of the Feast of the Tabernacles . The services were rendered as usual by the Chief Rabbi, in his usual matchless manner, assisted by the, Revs. J. H. Landau and A. P. Wolinski. Before concluding the services the Rev. A. B. Davis delivered the following sermon : — : 'rrn ro*m bin n? m wm i^ns ; These passages I presume to render after the following manner :— ' Of what avail is it for the intelligent poor inan to walk in competition with those, 'who; ' inove in a higher sphere of life. Better is it. that he should be satisfied with what he is able to attain than that his soul should long for the unattainable, for this is but vain and only occasions torment of spirit.' 'What we wish to say this Succoth day, and press upon, the attention ol the industrious toiler, may be perhaps better and more simply conveyed by the reproof given to the prophet {Samuel...

Around the World. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 15 October 1897

Around the Worli — +. — Rev. Dr. Isidore Myers. rrognosticators have ceased craning their necks, at. the Bush-street Temple, San Fran cisco, since the crowded pews at every lecture ?' of the Rabbi speak for themselves. Each Saturday morning we are treated to a sound, . rattling sermon, void of fanaticism, yet full of . healthy, clear arguments in support of Judaism pure and untouched by the merciless pruning s of the Reformer. Dr. Myers- has set to work in real earnest to do some bold reforming in his own way — such as having the torch and , prayers chanted in the oJd traditional way, instead of reading them in the Anglican style, as had been the custom prior to his arrival ; here— and the English prayers, which were adopted frpm the Union Prayer Book were promptly rooted out of the service. The Sunday . night lectures, too, are an established success, the attendance being so larg that many are unable to obtain seats downstairs. Many prominent gentlemen are regular attendants. Ijast...

Social and General The Feast of Tabernacles. AMONG THE SUCCAHS. THE MONTEFOIRE HOME. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 15 October 1897

Social and General ? . ? ♦ ? The Feast of Tabernacles. AMONG THE SUGGAHS. THE MONT.EFOIRE HOME. This'year Mrs Barnett, matron of the Home, has not had the usual contingent of lady helpers to adorn the Succah. But the beauty of the Succah has net been equalled on any previous occasion, and Mrs Barnett is much complimented on her work. It was very disheartening, after the trouble taken in this direction, to have such a heavy down-pcur on Sunday pvpninor. After the services at the Synagogue, the Rev. J. H. Landau officiated at the Succah, assisted by the Rev. P. Philippstein. For a wet night the attendance was very large. Among the gentlemen present were: Messrs Gotthelf, C. P. Hyman, S. Harris, I. Barnett, and L Jacobs. Fortunately, the building was securely roofed in a manner that pre sented the rain from entering, but the covering could be drawn up when the showers were over. On Monday evening the Rev. J H. Landau officiated again at the Succah, and among these present we noticed th...
