Chilled Meat in America. [Newspaper Article] — The Dubbo Liberal and Macquarie Advocate — 10 February 1894

Chilled Meat in America. A N.S. WAI.ES s-tockman, now making observations "of how the meat trade is managed in America says : " It is curious, in the face of what is said of loss of quality by chilling meat, to find it a regular practice here (in Chicago), while the markets arc llush with beasts-beeves they are called that slaughtering goes on far in excess of requirements, and btacks of quarters are chilled and : put aside, to be operated on when catfle are scarcer and dearer during the winter season, j Then; is immense humbug spoken about chilled meat, for I am certa n that both in britain and here, hU per cent of what is sold has been eui'iod or frozen, and is all tin; brttev of it. NOTES AND COMMENTS. [Newspaper Article] — The Dubbo Liberal and Macquarie Advocate — 10 February 1894

NOTES AND COMMENTS. THE Adelaide unemployed have been petitioning for relief works, and the Government has offered to supply! eaeh man who will crook 2| yards of stone with a week's rations for him self and family. The unemployed asked for bread; the Government have offered them stone first, with the more digestible article to follow. 1 The scheme, however, has not been favourably received, as only two meu .wailed theniRelves of the offer. The majority of the unemployed, an Ade laide telegram states, condemn the i Govern me lit proposal as an insult. The general view that will be taken will hardly be in sympathy with the "insulted1' persons. It is unfor tunate that remunerative employ ment cannot be found for all willing to work, and as such work cannot be given the South Australian Govern ment have done the best thing pos sible in placing within the reach of everyone the means of providing food for themselves and families. It can not be said that the amount of work required in retu...

THE DUBBO LIBERAL AND MACQUARIE ADVOCATE. Saturday, February 10, 1894. [Newspaper Article] — The Dubbo Liberal and Macquarie Advocate — 10 February 1894

THE DUBBO LIBERAL AND JflAGQUARIE ADYOCATE. ttalurduy, Fetnur.r 10, M1M. Is another column will be found an account of a vif-.it of inspec tion paid to tkc Pitt Town labour settlement by a STAR reporter. It will be remem bered that a few months since iMs settlement was con demned by Mr. Ewing, M.L.A., as being totally unfit for the purpose for which it had been set aside. The land was de clared to be of the worst de scription, and the prospects of the experimental village settle ment were considered hopeless. When the Pitt Town board of 'directors were forced to apply for additional assistance, the "opponents of the scheme pointed -out that this was proof that Mr. Kwing's criticisms were well founded, notwithstanding that it was then shown that the improvements made gave ample security for the money already .advanced, and that the additions "to be made would cover any further grant. The STAR'S article /certainly places the position -of the settlement in a very -different light to wh...
