Military Ball. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 24 July 1908

Military Ball. The third annual military ball, in connection with the Alexandrs and Cathkin half-squadrons ot the 7th A.L.H. Regiment, was held in the shire ball on Friday last. Despite the threatening weather conditions, the whole proceedings passed off with great eclat, and were marked by the presence of a large number of visitors from Mansfield, Yea, Euroa and other' distant parts. The whole district was well represented and we feel sure that they were well pleased with-' the evening's enjoyment. Amongst tl ose in uniform, the following were eon spicuous :-Major F. Purcell, Captain O. R. Scale, Captain F. Rossitor, and Lieutenants J. G. Macdonald, Storey and A. Dunn. The hall presented a magnifieent; appearance, in fact we might say we have not seen it look prettier. It was: under the personal supervision ofEthat, popular lady, Mrs Dr. Johnson, and too much praise cannot be gives to. her, not only in connection with. this' function, but all past favors in. which this lady took su...

Junior Football. The Ramblers and The Terrace agii h met on the park reserve, last Wednesday, and after a very even game, resulted in a win for The Ramblers by one point, the finals being-Ramblers, 1 goal 3 behinds ; Terrace, 1 goal 2 behinds. We do not often quote from "Truth." We are scarcely prepared to quote a cer tain article in that journal of July 18, upon the Metropolitan Mission, whose secretary was at one time incumbent of Sr. John's, Alexandra, buc' we think we :?* justified in calling the attention of Anglicans to it,. who take an interest in Anglican affairs. Statements of a sensa. tional nature are therein made that their should be an instant investigation into the whole matter. With so many scandals gathering about the administration of Anglican affairs, each fresh one emphasize the others, so that churchmen are begin ing to ask : Has not the time arrived for a through investigation to be made. The scathing article has not yet been replied to and no doubt will' be all...

LAST SATURDAY'S GAME. Johnson's Creek v. Yarck. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 31 July 1908

LAST SATURDAY'S GAME. BY ONLOOKER. :T Johnson's Creek v. 'Yarelk. An exciting match was played betwree the above teams at Yarck on Saturday last. More than usual interest was taken in the game, because if Yarck won, it placed both' teams on an eqnal footing. Yarck won by five points, and I would not be surprised to see them come out on top. The day was fine and a largeo number of spectators were present. Play was started fairly punctual, and from the bounce of the ball, it could be seen that the game would be fast and willing. The first quarter was well contested, but Yarck were superior to their opponents, and kicked 2 goals S behinds to 1 behind. Marlin kicked the first goal and Smith the second. A player in passing the ball to Smith threw it when in front of the goals, and expecting the umpire to give a free Rick, players on both sides stooped play. To everybody's surprise Smith rau u, aund punted the ball through the uprigb,.:, which was allowed. The second quarter was more even...

quXaldrra l qn Standalrd NEC TEMIERE NEC TIMIDE. FRIDAY, 'JULY 31, 1908. Trun coming of the Fleet is regarded with r.ixed feelings as the fateful week approaches. To the holiday maker and sight-seer the occasion is hailed with undisguised delight. To the sho?,kicpcr and business man who ii threa: rned with a series of com pulbsry holidays and half-holidays, on the one hand, nr,d wlho is daily im portuned for subscriptions towards street decoration, on the other, the visit is already becoming a source of perplexity, with the possibility of financial embarrassment. It was claimed that with the immense influx of visitors to Melbourne, the trading coinmunity, large and small, would be directly benefited. But the shop. keeper who stocks his premises with the latest, daintiest and most fashion able designs andd wares, pertinently asks haw lhe is to dispose of them when time Government-proclaims its bank holidays and compels him to close his doors. The deputation, which was intro duced by Mr. Cullen, M.L.A., had asked for a grant of about F150 'towards the erection of a new mechanics' institute and free library, at a cost of £700, at Pyramnil Hill. The Premier looked at the plan orthe proposed now building, and told the deputation that it was not in his line. " The building is for public purposes." said Mr. COulen encnurag ingly. Chlldren's Fancy Dress Ball A BRILLIANT 'TUCCESS. Mrs. J. I. Johnson and the several adiee associated with her are to be dongratulated for the excellent manner In which the above blil was conducted on Friday last. The attendance was large, and a very enjoyable time was spent by old and young. The hall was tastefully decorated and to all appear ances a vast amount of work had been carried out, as usual, by the few. iaving had a deal of experience in the matter of providing and catering for such func tions as the one under review, it is openly admitted that the few kind ladies in our midst who are ever ready to pro malgate and carry out such affairs are beat when not interfered with. "Too many cooks spoil the broth," is an old time adage, and it is just as well that the same is observed at the present time. Alexandra is particularly fortunate in having so few ready to devote their time and, In fact, their money. We almost feel inclined to mention half-a-dozen names of those who are al...
