Werriwa Times. FRIDAY, AUG. [?]3, 1901. SOUTH AUSTRALIA AND THE NORTHERN TERRITORY. [Newspaper Article] — Werriwa Times and Goulburn District News — 23 August 1901

Werriwa Times. FRIDAY, AUG. rs, tQot. SOUTH AUSTRALIA AND THE NORTHERN TERRITORY. The deplorably slow rat« 'if increase in the population of tills huge continent shows out with remarkable distinctness in the last census returns of South Australia. Although the province constitutes one of its largest divisions, its total population at the present time, including that of the N'orthern Territory, is found to be only ¡62,600, the in crease for the last ten years being 42,170—mostly infants. If this may be taken as an index to its probable rate of increase in the future, then it will take a very long time indeed to bring the total population of the pro. vince up to a respectable figure. There is nothing at present to indicate that any greater or more rapid advance will take place in the near future than that which has been seen already. That portion of the country has been nettled for wer sixty years ; its capacity for production, as regards the chief sources of prosperity"agricultural, ...

Love's Triumph. CHAPTER V. [Newspaper Article] — Werriwa Times and Goulburn District News — 23 August 1901

Love's Triumph; CHAPTER V. When- this same man—Linda recog nised him now by Iiis large shaggy light eyebrows—camc again, lie had assumed a new character, and pre sented himself in the garret as the medical man for whom Mr. Arelen had been inquiring. With some difficulty. Selby collected himself to reply to thç questions- put to hiin. As long as he preserved a recumbent attitude he was tolerably easy, and the heaviness oppressing his intellect began to disperse ; but to sit up or tall: brought back all the worse symptoms, and the result w*ns inva riably a return of the delirium followed by exhaustion. Through'a crack in the door-Linda ' watched the so-called surgeon with ever-deepening mistrust of his inten tions. She had heard him avow that all he had done was part and parcel of some plot of which Selby Arden was the victim ; and when.he spoke of reveng ing himself there was à vindictive glitter in his light eyes that made her shudder and veil her own. But what was he about to do no...

MR. CRICK'S RABBIT BILL. [Newspaper Article] — Werriwa Times and Goulburn District News — 23 August 1901

MR. CRICK'S RABBIT BILL. The following lutter from Mr. Fred. D. Badgery appeared in the S. M. Herald ' Sir,—I regret that Mr. Cl ick, in in troducing his new Rabbit Bill, has not first thrown it open for public criti cism, because there are so many im-' portant details to be considered which will decide whether such an impor tant measure snail meet with success or failure. So far, I may say, Mr. Crick appears to have some practical knowledge of the matter, and he is quite right in deciding not to attempt to destroy rabbits on the, crown lands, and I think he is going quite far enough in the fencing clause when lie promises that he will do half the wire netting between crown land and that of any group of holders who wish to enclose theirs. If the crown allows the Pas tures and Stock boards £ for £ sub sidy, and allows them to expend the amount as their experience and intel ligence direct them, the boards will then be encouraged to impose a proper assessment instead of shirking the ta...

STRONG CRITICISM. [Newspaper Article] — Werriwa Times and Goulburn District News — 23 August 1901

! STRONG CRITICISM. ¡ Is* the " Bankers' Magazine " (London) for July, Mr. \V. K. Lawson on the question : Is the national wealth of the; United Kingdom oil the wane ? hits the freetrade policy pretty hard, us follows :— Our policy of doing nothing for our selves that any foreigner will be kind enough to do for us is the key to our lopsided foreign trade. The question ! of how long we may be able to carry it on without trenching on the national 'capital may be very interesting to academic statisticians,"but there is just J a risk that by the time they have dis i covered something wrong it may be already beyond remedy. Surely a wiser question would be—Why persist in a course which produces at best very dubious results while our com mercial rivals 011 the opposite tack are achieving results which admit of no dubiety at all ? Why sacrifice our selves to any economic creed, whether it be freetrade or protection, when our plain duty and our highest interest are to develop all our natural...

The Price of Meat in Victoria. MELBOURNE, Wednesday. [Newspaper Article] — Werriwa Times and Goulburn District News — 23 August 1901

The Price of Meat in Victoria. Mkuiol'rxk, Wednesday. I Any doubt existing in the mind of the j consumer whether the present almost prohibitive price of beef and mutton would be maintained during the next few weeks would have been speedily i set at rest by paying a visit to Xew market salevards to-day, when, [although the yarding of stock was a great deal larger than it has been for sohle time previously, competition was i very keen among buyers, and prices of stock of all descriptions showed a marked increase. Among the first lot I of cattle submitted was a pen of seven I bullocks from Pearson's estate, Gipps I land, which realised £18 5/- per head, ¡and the same auctioneers who sold I this lot had not the slightest difficulty j in obtaining £17 -,(1 and itfi 2/6 per j head for two other pens of cattle ; but ! i even these figures were topped later j :on, when Mr. Woolcock paid £23 per ;head for two bullocks bred audi fattened by Messrs. THOSE TREES AGAIN. [Newspaper Article] — Werriwa Times and Goulburn District News — 23 August 1901

THOSE TREES AGAIN. Aiiout io o'clock (his morning pedestrians ¡11 Auburn and Montague sheets were attracted by the sight of a carpenter busily engaged liking a notice on one of the " famous" tree* near Messrs. Hogers and Go's, new building. The notices were painted on solid boards and carefully bolted through the tree steins. On drawing near the " man in the street" was amused to iitid a recrudescence of the tree trouble in the following which appeared on board- No.- 1 Notice—Any person damaging this tree after this date will be threatened with a »Supreme. Court action, perhaps an injunction may be applied for 'perhaps not.'—C. KcH»EKS,*Aitg. 22, vjot" The second board bore the following :— •'This notorious tree has been purchased by Charles Kogcrs from the Goulburn Council for the sum of ¿5, not for ;£ioo as previously valued bv an Incompetent valuator.
