Weekly News-Letter FROM AN APPRENTICE TO HIS MOTHER. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Real Estate Journal — 20 August 1930

Weekly News-Letter FROM AN APPRENTICE TO HIS MOTHER. Dear Mum, . 'Well, J. went to the Plaza Theatre, the place which is all on one floor and you feel as though you were in a hall instead of a theatre. The floor sloped away to the stage and the cushions on the seats' hadn't been bunched un after the last audience so that the)'' banked up towards the backs and left me feeling all the time as though I was slipping off. I had to keep my heels dug in, like they do in a tug-o'-war to keep myself on my lounge chair which is precisely the. same as any other chair, only more uncomfortable. J don't know where those cushions sprang from. Personally I'd rather spring from, sprung scats. Last week I. said Lady Stonehaven went away without saying good-bye; well, she must have j eacl thatj for she said a general good-bye from Brisbane Government House. Eddie Hortoh's motor horn has 32 notes. I think he uses it at the theatre. I said I thought lie must -'play' by ear, and -my mate said 'Yes, lie d...

SOMETHING QUAINT [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Real Estate Journal — 20 August 1930

. SOMETHING QUAINT Accidental antl quaint are the two words that best describe this little home. Accidental because nothing is prim and proper, but just seems to be delightfully haphazard and dom estic, and quaint because of that. Entering the porch, with its flat Gothic arch and Italian shield, a convenient entrance hall is' met with, out of which lead the' stairs and a passage to the lounge; a toilet room ancl 'phone booth are provided in convenient spots. The lounge is approached by descending three steps, making it a self-contained unit with greatly en hanced effect; two pairs of French doors give out on to a balconette. Upstairs are two large bedrooms, a bathroom and balcony, though judging by the elevation and the heavy Availing it would not get over much sunlight. We are at a loss to account for the chimney like excrescence at the right hand side of the main roof; may be it is the laundry and kitchen flue, emphasised with a cornice and carried up. to balance the plain low one...
