APPROACHING DANGER. [Newspaper Article] — Western Herald — 11 February 1888

APPE0ACHING DANGER. We have received a copy of the following letter, which vre gladly publish. It was addressed by Mr. Blair, of R. Ooldsbrough aud Co., during liis trip in the Western districts, to a pastoralist in tills district, and very clearly demonstrates the danger uow thiieateuin': the whole of the runs iu this neighlwurhood. That the inactivity of the Govern ment in this matter will be followed by an equivalent amount of responsibility . cannot be doubted, but it is simply monstrous to think that the wealth of individuals and die prosperity of the State should be endangered by the dense stupidity or criminal apathy of the Government aud its officials. ' Knowing you arc intcsested in the rabbit ques tion in all its aspects, I thought it would be well to give you my view s of this thickly infested part I came across from Hay to Wilcannia,^-y coach pass ing through Mossgiel, Ivaukoe, Mount Monaro, Tcrrawinhae, JBilhjUa, etc From Mount Monaro to the Darling the rabbits have eat...

DENTAL SURGERY. [Newspaper Article] — Western Herald — 11 February 1888

DENTAL SURGERY Da. Younger, of New York, has just success fully accomplished an experiment in dental surgery that is not only interesting but im portant. For many years the experiment of keeping alive the periosteum of a tooth by inserting it into tne como oi a cock soon after extraction has been tried with success. The periosteum is the layer of tissue sur rounding the bone and through which the bone receives its nourishment. When a healthy tooth, before vitality jb extinct, is embedded in the comb of a cock, it is there bathed in healthy blood, and in the majority of cases the vitality of its tissues is main ? tained, natural adhesions take place and the tooth is soon growing in its new resting place. Some time ago Dr. Younger thought f.Ua-f. ifliiia Tvi*a f-fn/?0 mitrlif: Ha innilo lino nf in dentistry. Sometimes teeth are transplanted from one person to another, but a large member of good teeth are lost for this pur pose, as the transplanting has to be done within a short time a...

OUR DRINKING CUSTOMS. [Newspaper Article] — Western Herald — 11 February 1888

OUR DRINKING uUSTOMS. '?Wb have lately remarked with pain on the drinking habits of some of our colonies, notably of New South Wales. A Eoyal Commission has been occupied for many months in taking evidence on this subject, and arrives at conclusions which should excite the concern of every inhabitant of the colony. The premier colony haB the distinc tion of drinking more intoxicating drink, and that of a worse quality, than almost any other English-speaking community in the world. This is'a bad distinction, which the following figures seem to confirm. The drink bill of the United States per head is £1 13s 6d, of New Zealand £3, of the United Kingdom £3 7s 10-J, of Victoria £4 13s lid, of New South Wales £5 14s. In the city of Sydney alone thu-e are said to be 3000 persons known to be habbitual and absolutely helpless drunkards. Dr. Maurice O'Connor, visiting eurgeon of Darlinghurst gaol, gave evidence that of were under actual medical treatment for diseases caused by drink. 'We are ...

TRAVELLING STOCK ROUTES. [Newspaper Article] — Western Herald — 11 February 1888

TRAVELLING STOCK E9UTBS Whitim* to us on die above subject, -a pastoralist well-known in this district, puts forward the following very truthful; arguments re travelling stock routes :— ?' Does it uot 6eem incongruous -to speak uiildlj'j that pastoralists ha\-ing long frontages to rivers are, nlitimvi. after na.vment of Id an acre rental to suh init to the encroachments of thousands, and tens of thousands of sheep making their way into Queeus - land rendering the land through wjiich they pass, and which ? probably has been «aved for summer feed, as bare as the desert sands? Does it not appear to you just and right that the pastoralist, who has spent thousands of pounds in conserving water, and, who is still spending -large Bums in' repairs to dams on such rivers as these ; should have some rebate given him in the matter of rental as a set off against the invasion of flocks and herds .to which he is subjected, and the loss lie sustains through the ruthless destruction of that pastura...
