Pafynfifrtw _5ntfy_£i pft#£t jLeimnon , Pa, WEDNESDAY, JULY 15, 1S57. Prepared for the Advertiser. Hon. William Strong. It is a source of pleasure to Ihe writer of the following sketch to dwell on «he character and career of one who has contributed more than his just share of good example to society, whose integrity, industry and ability, render him eminently deserving of the respect and confidence of his fellow-citizens, and whose important services to the nation at large, reflect unfading lustre upon the fame of his adopted state. William Strong, who now is one of the nominees of the democratic party for the Supreme Judgeship of Pennsy!- vauia, was born in Somers, Connecticut, on the 6th of May, 1808. His father, a Congregational clergymen of influence and ability, at an early age sent him abroad into the best schools and academies which New England then afforded. Mehding Roads.—Having lately witnessed the annual operation of mending roads in the countrywe are in a n_^_oSd to protest against the whole miserable system—-a system adopted in early times, and in some measure necessary in the first sett lemejn_^of a new country, but utterly incompatible with the idea that we are a' progre/iive people—because in the matter ¦¦ of road-making there is no progress visible. We saw men at work last week digging black muck out of the ditch where a road passed a swampy place, and piling it up in the cart-way to fill ruts and level the surface. This is worse than wasted labor—it is a waste of a valuable manure, without a single iota of benefit to the road. It never will compact into a solid track. If wet, it will wash into and down the brook ; if dry, it will turn to dust and blow away. One load of gravel would be worth more than the slow-and-easy muck-digers would put on the road in a week. In another place, for a dozen rods in length, the roadmende...
