MTHE PEOPLES FORUM ) [Newspaper Article] — Better Farming — 1 October 1913

MTHE PEOPLES FORUM ) Raising Alfalfa Seed t . •; MTOR BETTER F ARMING : Dear Sir : —For several years past I liavc been trying alfalfa on a larger area Htch year and have met with considerable success . 1 think more farmers would no into alfalfa on a large scale if it were not for the high cost of seed . Is it not possible for us in the Middle States to raise alfalfa seed as we raise clover seed ? What information and advice can you give ust ¦ FRANK COLLINS . Wisconsin . The raising of alfalfa seed in the more humid eastern states should not , generally , be attempted , as it will not only interfere with obtaining full value in the hay crop , but the less fertile soil will not produce as vigorous seed as will the newer and richer lands west of the Missouri River . At present the best seed for general use is produced between that river and the Rocky Mountains . Utah produces a hardy seed , but much , if not most of it , is raised under irrigation , and , hence , at least theoreticall...

STR & NGE _ NPTRUE [Newspaper Article] — Better Farming — 1 October 1913

STR & NGE _ NPTRUE Keeping Dead Ancestors Japanese Find Embalmed Dead in Good Preservation After Centuries In the old days in Japan the embalmers were successful in securing an extraordinary amount of preservation in the bodies on which they operated . The Japan Chronicle draws attention to a case of this nature which has recently come to light in Kobe . The operations , which are being conducted by the municipality , included the removal of some graves of the Aoyama family , situated in the rear of the Anyoji temple . Two graves were opened belonging to old daimyo who were buried about 200 years ago . The graves consisted of stone cells with large coffins of kusunoki wood , containing inner coffins of earthenware . When the spaces between the cell walls and the wooden coffins were opened those present were surprised to see that the bodies were in a state of perfect preservation , and had all the appearance of wax figures . The old Amagaski lords lay in almost lifelike f...

^ YOUNG ^ EARM FOI ^ KS Contentment In summer , when tis very warm , And all the folks complaining go , It s then I like the winter-time , Brave winter , with its ice and snow And when the blustering blizzards race And it is cold as cold can be , The very hottest summer day Is not one whit too warm for me .
