BERKSHIRES IN CALIFORNIA . [Newspaper Article] — Farm Home — 1 March 1900

BERKSHIRES IN CALIFORNIA . Mr . C . H . Sessions , Los Angeles , Cal ., the well-known breeder of Berkshire and Poland China swine , writes The Farm Home : When in conversation with you at the time of my visit in Spring-field , I made the statement that I thought the demand for Poland Chinas was increasing faster than for Berkshires in this section , but on my return found that sales had been good during the summer , and our sales of Berkshlres were larger than I supposed . Our sales in 1 S 99 wove nearly 60 per cent larger than in 1 S 9 S , and lately had to refuse to make prices , as we had only young litters . Our sales of Poland Chinas in 1899 ( while only half those of Berkshires ) were double those of 1898 , but we only have a small herd of them . Tho Berkshires are still in the lead and will probably stay there . Our success in exhibiting at our state fair gives us a reputation and the demand for our stock is increasing . We are increasing our herd with stock of the best type...

They write that their Berkshires are doing nicely and more attention will be given to this important part of their business in the future . imported boar , Luster s Bachelor , received from the Biltmore farm , we have received one from N . H . Gentry , and have ordered two bred sows from A . J . Lovejoy & Son . Another year we hope to have a herd better than ever before . The year 1 S 99 was the driest in more than twenty-five years , and 1893 was but little better , and for several years we have had scanty rainfall , so that things have looked serious to farmers , but the crops in 1 S 99 were better than in 1 S 9 S . This winter the rains have come in good shape and crops are looking first class , and if they continue as they have begun we shall have a irrand year . At present we have had 80 per cent as mu...

Im Berkshire j LONGFELLOW W . 33611 . Longfellow W . is a very strongly inbred descendant of old Longfellow 16 S 35 , with that combination o £ Model Duke 17397 , King Lee 27500 , through Duchess sows of Mr . Gentry s breeding that ensures the best of quality and breeding most highly prized by the best students of Berkshire pedigrees . There is a distinct character and strong family likeness peculiar to the Longfellow strain that cannot be mistaken . Longfellow W . 33611 is not an accidental production , but descends from ances...

ISouthdown Sheep [Newspaper Article] — Farm Home — 1 March 1900

ISouthdown Sheep Mrs . F . W . Barrett , AVadsworth , N . V ., reports that she has 28 great big strong lambs from 16 ewes . The largest number of her ewes are yet to be heard from . Hon . O . A . Drummond , Montreal , Canada , has a larger number of imported sheep in his flock than has any breeder on this continent . These were all selected with great care and naturally he is proud of his Southdowns . Others may well be proud if they can secure some of these sheep or their progeny . Mi . John Hobart Warren , Hoosick Falls , N . Y ., writes he has at present some grand yearling rams and as fine ¦ ewes as I have ever seen . Mr . Warren frequently visits the best -Southdown flocks in England , from time to time selecting the best rams he can obtain for renewing the blood in his old established and very superior flock . Mr . W . H . Compton , Monroe , Ohio , writes : Sheep are in good condition ; am expecting lambs soon . I showed Southdowns at seven county fairs last fall and won eigh...

j Poultry * j [Newspaper Article] — Farm Home — 1 March 1900

j Poultry * j POULTRY POINTERS FOR MARCH . H . H . Fike writes The Farm Home data for the fancier and farmer as follows : As in every pursuit of business , there the several essential points to be observed , and there is no exception to the rule in the poultry industry . The first is the man ; he must be a lover of the feathered tribe , to look into all the little details , making sacrifices for his fowls , and never to falter at defeat and disappointment . The fancier is a lucky man indeed • who does not encounter these little ups and downs in poultrydom . The second matter to consider is the stock . If you are starting in the poultry business , be it ever so small , use only thoroughbred stock . There are many good varieties to suit all climates ; to choose your breeds is a study , as you only want those kinds that will put money in your hands . If breeding for broilers and all around farm fowls , the barred Plymouth Rock and white Wyandottes are the best ; if for eggs alone , the...
