BECAUSE different makes of spreaders look alike—dont think they are alike . There s just as much , or more , difference between two spreaders of different makes that look alike as there is between automobiles of different makes that also look alike . It s the way the spreader is built that counts . The way the power is generated , the materials , the design and moving of the apron—the way the power is applied—such things are what you must be careful about in buying a spreader . The best thing is to be sure of the makers—that they are absolutely experienced and reliable . The market has become flooded with spreaders of slip-shod quality—slapped together in a hurry—since the demand has grown so large , owing to the general recognition of the big money-making and time and labor-saving qualities of good manure spreaders . The actual value in actual use of IH C Spreaders Cloverleaf Corn King Kemp 20 th Century has been proved by hundreds of satisfied farmers . Years of experience and stu...

The American Berkshire Con -gress . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 April 1910

The American Berkshire Congress . To Berkshire Breeders : — It is perhaps now too late to question the advisibllity or selecting as president of the Congress one who has but limited time to give to the work that must be done to make it a living , vital force producing the results in which we are all interested , namely , more and better swine on more farms , on all the farms if you please . In a more selfish way , perhaps , we are confident that such results simplified mean , more and better Berkshires on more and better farms , ( on all the the farms ) . Suffice it to say , then , that only can we go as far this year and next as the majority of the breeders are willing to go . No amount of time or enthusiasm put into the organization by the officers will compensate for indifference or lack of interest on the part of the breeders , and this we hope to secure by putting forth plans that will be sufficiently comprehensive to promise results . If I were to write one phi ase for the gui...

'Not How Many , But How Good . " [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 April 1910

Not How Many , But How Good . The above motto has always been foremost in the breeding operations of Mr . Ralph Creighton , Creighton , Mo . Mr . Creighton believes that it pays to raise good Berkshires and his desire Is to breed and develop the very best . He realizes that a herd boar is essential and was fortunate in securing the great breeding boar , Berry s Choice , a son of Berryton Duke and Silver Tip 62 d . This is a very popular line of breeding and Berry s Choice is not only a good individual but a wonderful breeder . We recently had the pleasure of inspecting Mr . Creighton s herd and although he has only a few sows and as small number of pigs , yet they are very uniform and of extreme high quality . They have the fancy heads that so many breeders desire and at the same time have the best of hams and backs and good feet . We were much taken with an October show boar that Mr . Creighton is offering for sale in this issue . He is sired by Berry s Choice and out of Golden Bea...

Baron Duke of Riverside Sold [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 April 1910

Baron Duke of Riverside Sold One of the pleasing incidents at the recent meeting of the American Berkshire Congress at White Hall , 111 ., was the sale at private treaty by A . J . Lovejoy & Son , Roscoe , 111 ., of their great herd boar , Baron Duke oi Riverside 126000 , to Mr . Chas . A . Steward , Fox , 111 . He Is a son of Baron Duke 63 d , the World s Fair wining son of Premier Longfellow , owned by C . S . Bartlett , Pontiac , Mich . It • will he remembered that Baron Duke C 3 d , was the first prize pig at the St . Louis World s Fair and sold at the Fair to H . C . Taylor , Orfordville , Wis . Mr . Taylor sold the boar to the Lovejcys for $ 1 , 000 and they in turn to Mr . Bartlett for the same amount . While at Lovejoy s , he sired Baron Duke of Riverside , one of the best boars used in the Lovejoy herd for some time . Mr . Steward certainly has reason to be proud of this great boar as any boar that is good enough to be used by the Lovejoys certainly deserves the...

Show Prospects for Fall Fairs . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 April 1910

Show Prospects for Fall Fairs . Breeders must remember that it takes time to properly fit a show herd and although some may think that it is early to begin preparations for the fall fairs , older breeders know that it is just the right time to begin to fit show herds . Those Berkshire breeders who expect to make a circuit of the state and county fairs will do well to remember that Mr . C . E . Sutton , Lawrence , Kans ., has some grand prospects for the under year classes . We recently had the pleasure of inspecting the Sutton herd and do not hesitate to advise our readers to correspond with Mr . Sutton if they need any under-year boars or sows to strengthen their herds . Mr . Sutton has recently shipped show prospects to Mr . G . Murrell Middleton , Shelbyville , Ky ., Mr . E . J . Barker , Thorntown , Ind ., and also to Mr . B . A . Gilt ner , Agency , Iowa . ¦ Mr . Sutton is especially proud of the fact that he sold a great show herd to Mr . O . C Van Doren , Loami , 111 . This h...
