In 1899 a company was formed by that energetic son of Socorro, J. E Smith, for the purpose of erecting a custom mill for the treatment by concentration of those ores After sending several tons of the ore to Denver fur a test he was told that the ore could not be treated. Within a couple ot month, New Mexico wijl.have another smelter to add .to the list and in all probability it-will be supplied with 'fufficient ore to admit of its constant operation. The com pany was organized a few weeks ago by a party of capitalists of Minnesota, and they have decided on erecting a 50-ton custom ' smelter a quarter of a mile south-' west of the Graphic smelter, near 'iagdalena. It will occupy the old Eaton mill site. Plans and ' specifications for the new structure are being prepared, and will be completed in a few days. By the ' inauguration oí this smelter the mining industry of that section ' will be greatly enhanced, as it is a well known fact that there are numerous prospects and mines near by which contain a large amount of low grade ore that will not bear shipment to distant 'points. In its early days it was considered as possessing the .richest surface showing of any ' mining camp known. The high grade ore lay in pockets and chutes, some of them being marvelously rich. The ore from these deposits has been taken out and shipped giving returns from a ' few hundred dollars to as high as Iioo.ooo per claim. In no instance has there been any development below water level.
