fz) gto jgailg storfcrn. ASTORIA. OREGON: D. G. IRELAND Editor. THURSDAY Nov. 1. 1877 It is Singular. The San Francisco Bulletin thinks "it is singular that Oregon makes no prominent figure in the dairying busi ness." This statement is made in an other column of our paper to-day. It is singular. We have before us a cheese that was made on the jfyrion county dairying farm of Mr. Henry A. Ankeny, which is proof positive of the.fact that Oregon has the farms, the men, and everything that tends to pro duce the very best articles in the dai rying business, but as has been fre quently urged -when our farmers wish ed to sell their wheat, oats, barley, etc. , at the top notch, the cry is raised that farmers must not turn specula tors. They have no right, says the wheat ring, to demand more for their wheat than we are willing to pay them for it. So we may say with re spect to the dairying business. Dealers refusing to pay Mr. Ankeny what his products are in fact worth in the mar kets, preven...

(e) - " S&e ails Qstexxmu ASTORIA. OREGON : D. G. IREI,AXI Elitor. FRIDAY f Nov.2, 1877 Tiie Lick Estate Compromise. The particulars of the compromise made by the trustees of the Lick estate have been published. The ar rangememt was made to avoid pro tracted and expensive litigation. All the devisees of the estate agreed to the compromise, except the Academy of Sciences. As this body refused assent, the trustees of the estate filed a bill in equity, asking the court to con firm the compromise. To this bill the defendants demurred on the ground that the trustees were not a legally constituted body. This demurrer, Jud ge "Wheeler has overruled. The decision sustains the trustees as a legal body, and foreshadows incidentally, the deision on the main question "Courts of equity are disposed to favor compromises," says the Judge. It is difficult for most people outside of the Academy of Sciences to find any good reasons for thus arresting the execution of this trust But some of the me...

The Corvallis Gazette is jubilant over the fact that the grading of the first section of ten miles of the nar row gauge to Yaquina is fast approach ing completion and the raising of funds with which to purchase the iron and rolling stock, is now in order. John A. Crawford, ex-Mayor Froman, John Conner and Abe Hackleman, of Albany, lead the van with liberal sub scriptions. Pox Bros., formerly of Corvallis, but now of Albany, in evi dence of their appreciation of what Benton county has done for them, in the past, came down handsomely. Pearce, of the ferry, to help the road along, has dipped his oar, and lo! a thousand in gold for Pearce. Although an investment in Real Estate may not at once prove lucra tive and yield an immediate income to the puivhaser, we have found, from many yearj experience, that all judicious investments made, either in farming lands or suburban property adjoining it growing and prosperous city like this, invariably result in a line speculation, or at all events in one that is doubly sure for a good paying investment. Not long since we published a dis patch from Chicago stating in sub stance that Gen.
