j|. •VJ1 1 S* „-?r N Si ~v"- ik A Git BAT men get a setback occasionally, which, though humiliating at tlto time, must be amusing even to them in their musing moments. Hon. Wm. M. Evarts, the graet lawyer and manof interminable sentences, whose language flows like a silver stream, and without more of a stop than an occasional comma, strings out his sentences from a half to a full column was made the victim a short time ago. The other day Lord Chief Justice Coler idge visited one of the courts In New York while Air. Evarts was in the midst of A two-column solid nonpareil sentence in his argument on an elevated railway ease. Of course the distinguished English judge was invited to a seat upon the bench. Mr. Evarts in courtesy to his distinguished auditor re peated his sentence, and before he had come to where he had been interrupted the great judge had fallen fast asleep, much to the amusement of the spectators and not a little to the chagrin of the speaker. The judge relieved the e...

TIIK Minneapolis Journal suggests that if Dakota would make application for admission into the union simultaneous with the like application of Montana, she would not likely have any opposition as the tw* would politically counterbal ance each other. There is much force in the suggestion but the question is whether Dakota desiresjidmission or not. There is little doubt, however, hut that the plan would succecd. Possibly South ern Dakota bases some of its. hopes on the counterbalancing influence. BAHNES county-politics is nothing if not sensational. The old factional dis sension is revived in the,.unimportant election this fall that assumed such a bitter phase last year. One republican county convention has been held and an other is called. Apparently none of the leading spirits who engaged in the con test last year have died, moved away or reformed, as the same names ap...

Green, all officials of the "West ern Union telegraph company, passed through the city on the belated train yes terday evening ou their return from the Pacific coast where they hayc been look ing after improvements in the service. ABOUT the coolest piccc of gall we have seen for some time is the dispatch from Yankton saying that Gov. Ordway. and his followers made a vigorous war upon' the constitution about a month before the election, giving out the impression that there was no other opposition to it than that alleged of the governor and his allies. The Herald at Yankton and Judge Shannon will be surprised to learn that they are among the "followers" of Gov. I A *&»? 1. 4ft":'-" WEEKLY ALERT. WARNOCK, EDITOR. IT now transpires that the Hon. Wil liam D. Kelley, pf Pennsylvania, better known as "pig-ironV Kelley, the prophet of protectionists, is to have a boom for president. We have had some chief execu tives who were dubbed "pig-headed" presidents, but a "pig-iron" president would bo both novel and new, and might take well for the novelty of the thing. Kelly Is an able man and no doubt strong in tlie keystone state, but he would hard ly do for a dark horse. He would proba bly be a darker horse at the election than at the convention. Pennsylvania seems to have exhausted her presidential timber when she gave to the nation her "Jeems" Buchanan, of Wheatland, in 1850. THE comet of 1812 has made its appear ance in the east again after a tour of seventy years "visiting al) the principal points of interest" iu the heavens. Its velocity being millions of miles per min ute it would be interesting to figure out where this heavenly wande...

WAllNOCK, EDITOU TUG "still bunt" canvass made in Minnesota among the Scandinavian ele ment for votes to elect the democratic Biermann governor over the republican Hubbard did not pan out, and the "still hunt" manipulators of the canvass arc still hunting, but hunting now for the place where tl-eir skimmer leaked. YIIG election returns are all in now and the political parties are casting up their profit and loss accouuts to sec on which side of the ledger the balance stands. Butler's balance sheet shows as well for the democracy of Massachusetts as a railroad report does for an cmoar rassed corporation, and is just about as reliable. ^. :.:b:M.':. ..-...V, if' 'V j./, {mm iniH$ A? THE Herald at Yankton sarcastically calla the rote taken on the constitution the cigar box election. It gives the total vote at about 18,000 and the majority for the constitution at 4,000, as counted. It thinks those advocates of the measure who can extract comfort from the result are very easily satisfied. The Heiald seems to forget that "Man winta hut little hero below, Nor wants that little long." THE WEEKLY ALERT. J. C. WARNQCK, EDITOH. THE Black Hills Journal, published in tlic "gold diggings," is inclined to smile at the report of the gold find at Lisbon. It 'says: "Evidently the people up in that country think that all is gold that glitters but they will shortly learn that gold does not glitter." IT seems like a great deal of gall on the part of Gov. Crittenden of Missouri to nnk'e a requisition en the governor of Massachusetts for a fugitive after ignor ing the requisition upon liim by the gov ernor' of .Minnesota to surrender Frank James, and it may be that old Ben. But ler will remind him of it. THE publication of the pension rolls of their respective countics by the country papers throughout the slates is a good scheme and one that will save the gov ernment hundreds of thousands of dol lars by exposing and lopping oil a great many corpses, and others whose disabili ty is constitutional laziness, that have been drawing their quarterly stipends regularly from thS ...
