NORTHERN TRIBON SATURDAY. MAY 26, 1877. TIIKOIGII CLEARANCES, Last MWRI the Tiur.rxE called atten tion to the ininstiee that was done to plnces located as is Cheboygan. The Chicago Intcr-Oi'ean, the other day, call ed attention to the same thin?, and ad vocated the necessity of a change, so that the country could keep posted through various custom houses of the actual business of different portions of the coun try. Vessels leaving OtvqgD, Buffalo, Detroit, and other ports below, whose final i equation is Chicago or Duluth. need not report or clear where they load, provided they have a through clearance from the port of first departure. Going the other way. of com se it is the same thing. This being the case, it is seen that these intermediate ports' get no credit on their custom house books for their shipments, and unless the editors of their newspapers keep it, there is no record at all of the business of these ports. At Saginaw and Bay City, for in stance, nine-tenths of the 'ship...

NORTHERN TRIBUNE. SATURDAY, JUNE 2, 1877. A COUNTY FAIR. The Tribune has, on several different occasions, through its columns, urged upon our citizens the importance ol or ganizing an agricultural society. We believe that it would be a paying society and do much for our county. It might not be that any immediate pecuniary re turn would be had from such an organization, but we believe that the future benefits to be derived from it would be incalculable, and that it would do more to promote the agricultural interests of the county than any other measure that could be adopted. It seems to us that now is a favorable time for some action to be taken looking to the forming of such an oiganiz ition. In a former article on the subject, we suggested the propriety of making an effort to secure the use of the grounds belonging to the Horse associa tion, believing that it would be to the mutual benefit ot both societies to join in the improving of the grounds. We are glad to see that the projec...

Im 4 NORTHERN TRIBUNE. SATURDAY, JUNE 9, 1877. THEY WANT THE Alt H Y BACK. During the late Presidential canvass there was a great cry made about the ar my being employed in the south to con trol the elections. The fact that there was only a squad of soldiers here and there throughout the whole southern territory made no difference. They were there, and this answered the puspose ot the politicians to raise their hue and fcry about the army being used for that pur pose. So loudly dW they proclaim this that many, doubtless, did believe that the army whs beimr used for this ex preps purpose. Since the inauguration President Hayes, many ojf te, troops ave been recalled from the south, and what few remain there have lost their terror to the inhabitants. There is no fear of intimidation now ; on the con trary, there are indications from that sec tion that they are anxious for soldiers to be sent down to protect them against a possible rising of the colored population driven thereto by outra...
