I take sincere pleasure in furnishing you for publication a copy of the inclosed or4,er issued at the Cantonment on Tongue River on the 13th day of March last, inasmuch as it tut does justice sim ply to a gallant little band of Infantry soldiers (composed of the 51 and 226 Regiments,) under the leadership of Gen. Miles, -whose movements during the past winter against the hostile Sioux has re sulted in the very unexpected return to the Spotted Tail Agency during the past ten days ot large numbers of bravts, to gether with their ponies, families and paraphernalia of war of all kinds. I am aware, it has been quite fashiona ble, in certain quarters throughout the country, to speak rather sneenngly of Gen. Miles' winter campaign as not hav ing been attended with any particular success. The exclamation being —''but we do not see that any hostiles were kill...

Correspondence of the Pioneer Press, BISMARCK, APRIL 21, 1877—I do not feel like tresspassing upon your space or of furnishing you a lot of Information with which you are already familiar, but as I had to promise at least twenty-five per sonal friends that I would give them my experience on the way to the Black Hill* so far as could—something they could rely upon for their own guidance 'in case their should conclude to follow—I conclu ded that a letter in the Pioneer Press would do the business for them: I was very much surprised at the large number of people in fjt Paul who are thinking of going to the Hills, but who at the same time prefer to have some one else make the venture first, from whom they can learn something of the chances of success in advance—those wise and prudent sort of people who decline to take a step in advance t...

liiinarckrD. T.f May 4, 1877, Wianrd Butte. I- was recently at Fort Abraham Lin coln, and heard a pretty legend concern ing a mound/ on the highest point of 4 which that post, or part of it, is located. The mound is about thirty feet in diame ter, and five feet above the adjacent ground at the present time. I asked the soldier if he knew its history. He replied: "The Indians say it was thrown up' hundreds of years ago, when on this hill and along the river at its base was a largo town. There was also a large town on the bluffs above Bismarck, on the east bank of the river. There was a renowned wizard, or medi cine-man located here, who had a beauti ful daughter, who was loved and sought in marriage by a young warrior who liv ed in the town on the east bank. The "wizard objected to the match, and tor bade his daughter to leceive the visits of her lover. Clandestine meetings result ed. One evening, as the sun was descend ing below the western horizon, the girl took the water-j...

v.. tfte gtemordi SrUmtif. Bismarck, D. T., May 16,1877. Notes From Deadwood. Correspondence Blsmvck Tribune* DEADWOOD, D. T. May 5th, 1877.— Things are just "booming" here and have been quite busy since I arrived. Property is higher than in Bismarck You can buy nothing in the business part of the town for less than a few thousand dollars. The price of lot nd building is just about equal to the rent for ten months. A very ordinary shack in the business part of the town will rent for $200 or $250 a month. A man bought a lot and building, well out, the other day for.$2700, and rented it for a year for $2750. The town is boxed up among the steep, wooded hills that tower up on all sides, and everything is crowded to gether. The hotels are full all the time, and the rush for the first table at meals is great, and no sooner does a man get through than another pounces on the vacant chair. The rooms are packed full of double beds, with just room enough to move between them. You mustn't sup...
