Our plan is to set two standards for each animal two and one half feet apart, between whjch the animal Is fastened with a chain around the neck, a branch of the chain running to each standard, terminating In a ring sliding up and down upon the standard ; these two branches of the chain running from each standard to the centre, con nected by a ring with two other branches from this ring going around the animal's neck, fastening with a long T through a ring. To-day its value is rated by millions. The Inland hit an area of only 100 bundled acres on the level, hut its conicul shape gives it an immense cubi cal measurement. It is a picturesque sight to one approaching from the sea, this rug ged isle with its glistening granite, its green fir trees and its numerous quaint buildings. A plnnt known to commerce by the name of clilerory is cultivated extensive ly in Belgium, France, England, Ger many, and vnrlous other countries of Europe, and also In the United States. It is also called succory. It belongs to the genus vhicl-orliim intylnt. One ppecles is eaten in Europe as a salad, while the best known variety Is used, after the root is roasted and ground, to adulterate coffee. Chlccory was Introduced Into England by Sir Arthur Young, In the year 17HS. He obtained the seed from France. It is, however, only within the past iifty years that it lias been extensively raised in Great Britain. Chlccory roots are dried, roasted, und ground. All the fat cattle and other stock of every kind are loft on the hands of the farmers at the beglultig of winter without food, and pro bably not a sufficiency of food loft to winter the horses that are used to till the ground ; consequently the cattle must be thrown on the market, or seek a more favored country for food.
