STATE JOURNAL. ALEXANDRIA: TUESDAY EVENING, FEB, 21, 1865. W. J- GOWtIVG, Kdltor. The Birth-Day of Washington The one hundred and thirty-third anniver-. sary of the birth-day of George Washington, the Father of his Country, will he celebrated here to-morrow with ceremonies appropriate to the occasion. Here, almost in sight of the sacred place where he laid down his glorious life, and where all that is mortal of the great chieftain reposes in the bosom of its mother earth, none can fail to be imbued with feelings appropriate to the day. As a nation, our country will, on that occasion, be more firmly convinced than ever that Washington neither lived, toiled or died in vain. The legacy he left us, fraught with untold blessings to the present and future generations, will be preserved despite the fact that paricidal hands have sought to level the fair fabric in the dust. Let each loyal American, on that day, renew again his oath that the Union founded by Washington shall not perish, and ...

A full house was in attendance, and the piece was as well rendered as such pieces generally are. If the stage were twice as large and the prison and vault scenes more appropriate representations, the piece could have been made very interesting. The various parts were well performed, and the credit of the pieces saved as far as possible, under the circumstances. To-night we have the Battle of King mountain,” Mr. C...

STATE JOURNAL. ALEXAXVRIA: FRIDA', EVENING, FEB. 24, 1865. W, ,T. D0W1NG,,,,.... Editor The Value of Charleston The New York Times says, “We estimate the loss of Charleston at this time, as equal to the loss of 50,000 men to the Confederates in battle. 5 ' This is putting the thing rather too strong. We know , from authority hardly questionable, that, had Gen. Lee fought a battle five months ago, and lost that number of men, he would have had very few left. The Timtt does not think that city 1 of any great importance to us.’ 5 Here again it is in error The possession of the city isof the utmost importance to us. This is proved by our having for several years past vainly tried to take it. It is valuable to us as a base for military operations, if nothing else. Its value to the rebels was of rather a negative character. We had hermetically sealed the harbor, vet the Confederates were forced to keep some 15,000 men there to resist our attacks. By evacuating the city, the services of th...

STATE JOURNAL. ALEXANDRIA: SATURDAY EVENING, FEB. 25, 1865, W. J. COWING. Editor. The Southern Heart Refuses to be Fired. Soon after the rebel peace commissioners returned to Richmond with the intelligence that they could not get Lincoln to admit that the United States had been split up by their efforts, or that the rebels were entitled to independence or any thing else but a charitable consideration of their numerous misdeeds, the leaders undertook the difficult task of “firing the Southern heart,” the effect to be gained thereby being a new concentration of all the elements opposed to the Government, The Confederate authorities, acting through the instigation of Jeff. Davis, assembled the faith- fal at the African Church, Broad street, Eichmond, aided therein by Extra Billy Smith, who also convoked the chiefs of his domain, (which is that part of Virginia where it is thought safe for him to show himself) to devise measures of desperation, having fearful reference to the “last ditc...

STATE JOURNAL. ALEXANDRIA: MONDAY EVENING, FEB. 27, 1865. W. J. ('OWING, K.lltor. Rebel Money Loans in Europe The cotton of the Southern Stajes has heretofore served as the basis on which pecuniaryaid was solicited from the capitalists in Europe. Had there been any way by which it could have been safely delivered, the security would have been ample. The recent brilliant successes of Sherman have, however, completely put an end to any hopes that might have been entertained by sanguine parties of even any more partial deliveries during the present war. The outlets are all closed now. Besides this, a goodly quantity of the staple fell into our hands at Savannah: a lot was destroyed at Wilmington and Charleston, and more will be captured by us at Mobile. All of these events, and more of a similar charsxter hereafter to happen, of.course impair the value of rebel securities in Europe, and increase the difficulty of raising money at all. It is hard now to say which will collapse the soone...
